A cold, heart-sealed goddess who spurns love × a devoted puppet born for love
Banished to the mortal realm, the benevolent True Lord had to make amends for her mistake in opposing the Celestial Court. She willingly gave up half her magic and became an exorcist, slaying demons and monsters to atone for her past.
The long years were too lonely. She cut bamboo for materials and spent three days and nights firing it in a kiln, making a puppet in the likeness of her senior brother.
From then on, the puppet silently followed behind her.
They were inseparable, eating and sleeping together every day. In mortal eyes, they were a loving married couple.
Bai Ren hunted demons far and wide, often going hungry. The puppet would clumsily climb trees to pick wild fruit, gather leaves to catch spring water, and carefully offer them to her.
Bai Ren wouldn't even look. She knocked them aside with one hand. "I don't want them."
The puppet tilted its head and blinked, forever wearing a wooden, bewildered expression.
Three hundred years passed in quiet routine.
Then the puppet disappeared.
Bai Ren never imagined the puppet would one day gain consciousness and run away without a word, taking her senior brother's face and form with it.
It didn't matter.
Ever since the puppet came into being, an invisible, transparent thread had bound their wrists together. It was a tether, and she believed she could find him, then burn him to a crisp.
Two hundred years later, when she met the puppet again, she discovered that somehow it had stolen another person's soul, learned to speak and smile, and even become a smooth talker.
"I ask for nothing in this life but to stay by your side. I can talk to you now. Aren't you happy?"
"I'm not him. Please don't treat me as if I were."
"Bai Ren, I've learned how to cultivate. I'm not completely useless..."
Before he could finish, Bai Ren slapped him and dragged the puppet off to find the person whose soul had been stolen.
Terrifyingly, in the hundred years they'd been apart, the puppet had already turned demonic. He gazed at the thread around his wrist and murmured, "You want me to turn back into a pile of broken bamboo? No. I won't agree."
Bai Ren realized in horror that the thread didn't just coil around their wrists. With an unstoppable force, it was wrapping around her heart.
This is bad! He dares to turn against me!
