As a Japanese-Italian who lived in Sicily, Sakai Rina had ancestors who entered the country with the First Vongola. She could certainly be called a Sicilian aristocrat through and through.
And her background wasn't the only thing she had going for her. She was beautiful and gifted, accomplished in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, and her fighting skills had earned praise from the Ninth. She was known as the Rose of Sicily.
After both her parents died fighting for the Ninth Vongola, Rina inherited a vast fortune and the Ninth's love. She became the top choice for marriage alliances among Italian men. All kinds of exceptional men braved the murderous glares of Vongola family members to come calling, each promising to treat the poor rose well for the rest of her life.
But before any of them could even make it through the door, news arrived from the Vongola family: the Ninth intended to marry his beloved goddaughter to his son.
Before the men could lose heart, more news arrived in Sicily from Japan: the candidate to become the Tenth had changed, and Rina had a new fiance.
...Over the months that followed, Rina's fiance changed every six months. Every one of them was a renowned rising star, a head or key member of one of the families.
Before long, a strange rumor about Rina's strict standards began spreading across Sicily: if Sakai Rina had never chosen you, you were a useless man.
And this year, the men of Sicily were horrified to discover that the person Rina had chosen wasn't even from Italy! The future of the mafia was doomed!
Having seen too many useless men since childhood, Rina lived by the principle, "You can count on a man when a sow can climb two hundred trees." She had never believed there was any point in falling in love with a man. A "friendship" built on mutual benefit was the most lasting bond of all.
She supported XANXUS because they had grown up together. She didn't mind helping her childhood friend on his path to power, and maybe even stealing one of his people along the way. When he crashed and burned, she wasn't fazed in the least. She built a good working relationship with the new Tenth, acting as his shield while continuing to poach his people.
She had poached nearly everyone worth poaching back home, and the Tenth seemed to have fallen for a woman. To avoid any misunderstanding, Rina turned her attention to Japan, which was still untapped.
Poaching from an ally and making him work for her wasn't quite exciting enough. She'd heard that the top killer in Japan's Black-clad Organization was incredibly capable, worth ten men. If she married him, could she get him to work for her for two hundred years?
