You Yue had never said a single word to his deskmate, Ji Lingsha.
She was the well-behaved student the teacher had planted to keep an eye on him. All she ever did was sit quietly and write in her notebook. Her only real talent was solving problems quickly, so every day he had ready-made homework to copy.
One day, while pulling out a test paper, he accidentally dragged out one of Ji Lingsha's hand-drawn comics. It was exactly like the crazy comic story he somehow got sucked into every night.
Like the ending where he, as the villain, had to get into a car even though he noticed the brakes were faulty the moment it started, then speed down the road and crash to his death.
Like how he acted like a bully in front of everyone, then came home all moody and melancholy, sitting coldly in front of a table full of food while he was starving, refusing to eat.
Like how he spent most of the comic forcibly keeping the heroine by his side, then, when the male lead returned to the country, threatened to jump off a building.
The eighteenth floor! That was the eighteenth floor!
With a dark expression, You Yue deleted his search history entry for “how to stop having so many dreams” and typed Ji Lingsha's pen name into the search bar instead.
Does anyone actually read this stuff?
You Yue: .
Her fans, clamoring for more, were all making requests. After studying them for ages, You Yue finally figured out what Ji Lingsha's advantage was, despite her lack of artistic skill.
Big portions, filling, fast, and every request completed the same day.
But when you're that fast, mistakes are bound to happen.
The next time he landed in the comic, You Yue found himself gripping a water pipe and heading off to fight the male lead to the death, but
“I only have three fingers.”
“Please give me a normal pair of hands.”
“Did you hear me? You forgot a finger.”
“Ji Lingsha, my hand's missing fingers! Look at me! Look at me!!”
You Yue, naturally, got beaten to a pulp by the overpowered male lead. The next morning, he dragged himself to school early, determined to have a good, long talk with Ji Lingsha!
He saw Ji Lingsha skipping breakfast to save money. He saw her racing against the clock, head bent over her drawing pad, updating her comic to earn a little money from tips. The warm breath she exhaled was the only thing about her that seemed at all warm.
You Yue stood there for a while, then turned and went to the school shop with a stiff expression. Without a word, he bought steaming hot rice balls and milk and stuffed them into his deskmate's desk.

Ji Lingsha had two little secrets.
One was that whenever she drew her comic, she could hear the thoughts of one of the characters. She figured there might be something wrong with her brain, but that was all right. Great creators always had their quirks.
The second was that, at some point, she'd acquired a Santa Claus who left all sorts of gifts in her desk: fragrant breakfasts, soft new sweaters, and all kinds of handy drawing tools...
It must be some fan who didn't want to reveal their identity, she guessed. Deeply touched, she started drawing even faster.
Her following began to grow, too. One generous fan was a recent follower, but after just two months of showering her with tips and comments every day, they'd become a top-tier fan.
Their requests were always so dull, though. They just said, “Please give me a comic about a healthy, normal person sleeping at home.”
Afraid of losing followers, Ji Lingsha drew three comics a day: one for the big fan and two for everyone else. She worked through the requests in order, treating everyone equally and trying not to offend anyone.
Hee hee, thank goodness she was so fast!

You Yue could end up inside the comic three times in one night. Thanks to his deskmate, he had originally planned to provide her with daily necessities so she wouldn't be so hard up and wouldn't have to work herself to the bone drawing comics for money.
But she only got more and more fired up, and he'd already accepted his fate.
Whatever. If Ji Lingsha liked drawing, then she could draw.
Maybe it was all the round-the-clock effort catching up with him. One time, You Yue suddenly fell ill and took three days off. During those three days, he never once entered the comic. He slept soundly and peacefully.
He thought Ji Lingsha must have been on the same wavelength and taken a three-day break at last. He opened the page of the only person he followed
