Xue Qiaozhuo wakes up to find she has transmigrated into a Republican-era theater. Not only is she the leading actress, she has forgotten her lines.
They shove a playbill into her hands, listing seven days and seven nights of performances. The plays printed on it are ones she cannot understand.
She has no idea what they are singing onstage,
while one bizarre horror after another unfolds below: the troupe leader splits in two, the clock tower rings eerily in the middle of the night, a beautiful corpse climbs out of a well, and a stitched-together body sobs that it was forced into a marriage...
Xue Qiaozhuo lets out a shrill scream about how terrifying it all is, then punches the beautiful corpse's head into a smashed watermelon. "If you people can't understand plain speech and insist on scaring me, then I'm afraid I know a little martial arts, too."
.
Everything in the Republican era is old, so old that she even runs into an ex-boyfriend here.
Her ex, top-tier star Chen Yanjie, cried like a sobbing teapot when she first broke up with him.
She accidentally mistypes "You there?" as "What are you doing?" and sends it to him, and he replies with 108,000 messages at lightning speed.
"I knew you still had feelings for me, Qiaozhuo."
"Other men are just hotels. I'm the only one who's truly home."
"I want to be the man silently supporting a she-wolf from behind, letting her roam free without complaint. Tolerance and understanding are a man's finest qualities."
Xue Qiaozhuo: "..."
.
Qiaozhuo and her companions have to safely make it through seven plays here.
Everyone likes Cheng Yujie, who is disguised as a Taoist priest. Qiaozhuo does, too.
But Chen Yanjie is the exception. He sees him as a thorn in his side.
Whenever he gets the chance, he badmouths Cheng Yujie to Qiaozhuo. "That kid looks shifty. Maybe he's the ultimate boss."
Even if he's not, Chen Yanjie doesn't feel bad for falsely accusing him. That's what he gets for daring to use those coy, manipulative tactics on Qiaozhuo that Chen himself uses. Saying things like, "Brother Yanjie seems to dislike me. I must have done something wrong to make him hate me. Miss Xue, am I really that detestable?"
Of course he's detestable.
Any man who dares compete with him for a woman deserves to die
.
As Chen Yanjie accompanies Qiaozhuo through one dangerous adventure after another, he never stops verbally attacking Cheng Yujie.
He does it so often that even the slow-on-the-uptake Qiaozhuo notices something is off. "Are you jealous of him?"
Only then does she realize that although Chen Yanjie seems calm and unruffled, in private he's consumed by twisted, dark jealousy.
He gives her a pitiful look again. "I just like you too much, so I can't control my emotions."
"If I've made you hate me, I'll sneak off and die alone in a corner."
"Waaaah~"
Xue Qiaozhuo: "..."
.
Cheng Yujie, who has been eavesdropping the whole time, says, "Well, well, well. What a masterful act."
He quickly gathers the minor monsters of every rank, and everyone assumes he has some profound insight to share.
Instead, he asks with clear, innocent eyes, "How do I compete with that damn manipulative guy for a woman?"
Everyone rolls up their sleeves. "Just kill him."
Cheng Yujie grits his teeth. "But he told me that if he doesn't die, I'll never get promoted to official boyfriend. And if he does die, he'll become her eternal white moonlight."
I'm no match for that level of scheming. Not even close.
