A Luo had two wishes in life. One was to protect all the spirits of the demon realm, and the other was to find his A Shi.
A calamity a hundred years ago had sealed the Demon God, reducing demon spirits to the lowest status among the three realms. They were enslaved by powerful cultivators and bullied by demonic cultivators, while the Xuantian Terrace, which claimed to represent the Heavenly Dao, turned a blind eye.
A Shi had disappeared during that same calamity.
Afterward, A Luo endured countless hardships and reached great heights in cultivation. He saved countless demon spirits and became the savior in the eyes of all demons.
Just as he found a way to break the Demon God's seal, he found A Shi as well. A Shi looked just as he did in A Luo's memories: gentle and deeply affectionate.
In the years that followed, A Luo braved fire and water to gather the spiritual treasures and magical artifacts needed to break the seal, with A Shi always by his side. With a confidant like that, what more could he ask for?
A Luo figured that once he freed the Demon God, he could retire in peace. From then on, he and A Shi would roam carefree among the mountains and rivers.
With everything finally in place, just as he was about to break the Demon God's seal in one decisive strike, someone attacked him from behind. A Luo spun around, his heart seized with horror. The person who had ambushed him was none other than his A Shi!
The person he had trusted most now wore an expression of cold, righteous resolve.
"A Luo, you put your selfish desire to protect the demon spirits above the safety of the three realms. As a servant of the Xuantian Terrace, I cannot let you sink any further."
A Shi had become an immortal of the Xuantian Terrace long ago!
So their supposed shared ideals had been nothing but lies A Shi tossed out to placate him;
and their supposed devotion unto death had been nothing but A Luo's wishful thinking.
The Xuantian Terrace regarded the demon spirits as a cornerstone of stability for the three realms. Why would it ever allow that cornerstone to rise up?
With the Lord of Ten Thousand Demons in its grasp, the Xuantian Terrace could control all the demon spirits in the world, reducing them to stepping stones for others to trample.
Sadly, by the time A Luo realized this, it was already too late. A vast net had closed around him, and a hundred years of effort had all gone to waste.
"Breaking the seal defies Heaven, and you will bring down a heavenly tribulation upon yourself. Once you leave this formation, you will meet certain death." A Shi's tone was firm and beyond dispute. "A Luo, give up resisting."
Outside the formation, heavenly lightning was ready to strike. Inside, A Shi remained resolute and impartial.
A Luo glanced at the churning thunderclouds, then looked at A Shi. The man was now an immortal lord of the Xuantian Terrace. He was no longer A Luo's A Shi.
"Even if I die, I will never let you have your way."
A Luo gathered the last of his strength, struck A Shi with his palm, broke through the net, and charged toward the heavens without hesitation.
In an instant, terror overtook A Shi's expression. "A Luo! Don't!"
By the time A Shi rushed forward recklessly, trying to stop A Luo, it was already too late.
A storm of thunder and lightning crashed down. A Luo's soul was blown to pieces, and he vanished from the world completely.
From that moment on, A Shi seemed to go mad. For hundreds of years, he did only one thing:
He traveled across the three realms, gathering the scattered ashes of A Luo's soul piece by piece.
But no matter how hard he searched, he could never find all the fragments.
Then one day, the Lord of Ten Thousand Demons was reborn, shaking the three realms.
A Shi searched for him desperately. Though his appearance had changed completely, A Shi still recognized him as his A Luo.
In that instant, A Shi was overcome with joy.
But the Lord of Ten Thousand Demons merely glanced at him indifferently. "Do we know each other?"
