Archenemy

A Li was found by Duan Qu in the barren mountains after the war. He was a Yao tribesman taken prisoner with no power to fight back, while Duan Qu was the Lord of the Red Blood Bureau in Bai Yujing, renowned for his iron impartiality and ruthless cruelty.

Everyone knew that Lord Duan hated the Yao frontier and its people most of all. They were destined to be mortal enemies, divided by a sea of blood and vengeance.

Yet A Li did not die beneath Duan Qu's twin blades. He survived, was brought back to Bai Yujing by Duan Qu, and became his prisoner.

-

Duan Qu had three wishes.

May every Yao rebel be eliminated, and may his father's generation's vengeance be avenged.

May Bai Yujing be peaceful and secure, so the people need not be torn from their families and left to wander.

May...

May the unruly fellow at home observe the duties of a prisoner, show a little more restraint and courtesy, and spend less time throwing tantrums and making trouble. If possible, may he also stay healthy. Nothing more: this person is always getting hurt or falling ill, and the sight is both irritating and vexing.

-

A Li thought about three things every day.

He wondered why Duan Qu, who was so handsome, insisted on wearing such a frightening mask every day.

He thought about how Duan Qu could smile and was good to him, so perhaps he wasn't as cold-blooded and heartless as the rumors claimed.

He thought about...

He wanted Duan Qu dead.

May he never be reborn.
