I first met Jiang Ling at the home of the employer Qin Ran worked for.
She had just broken up with the boyfriend she’d been planning to marry. To avoid questions, she flew all the way to the capital.
The capital’s night was hazy and dreamlike. Unable to make out his features in the darkness, she let her drunkenness get the better of her and took liberties with him.
The next morning, once she was sober, Qin Ran faced the cool, dignified man and wished she could bury her head in the ground.
Jiang Ling sneered, his voice cool. “Miss Qin, you certainly have a way with people.”
Too embarrassed to face him, Qin Ran threw caution to the wind. “What do you want?”
Later, when they were lost in passion, Jiang Ling leaned over her and looked down from above. “I’ll never marry you.”
But in the end, she was the one who ended things. She was the one who left without a word.
Qin Ran was always polite, even when Jiang Ling caught up with her. “Mr. Jiang, I thought we were already over.”
Three years later, Jiang Ling sneered. “That’s impossible.”
He stepped forward and grabbed her wrist. His fingertips were cold from the night, and his grip hurt. His voice brushed lazily against her ear, carrying a trace of hatred. “Qin Ran, you were the one who came after me first. What right do you have to end things?”
“If I haven’t said it’s over, then it will never be over.”

Dear readers, please check out my upcoming novel, Reborn as the Legitimate Daughter. I’d love it if you added it to your reading list!
Night Pearl is reborn in the best year of her short life, the year before her wedding.
This time, she will live her life well. She won’t ruin herself to protect that heartless ingrate, a man greedy for rank and wealth who killed his wife and children and would do anything to become a royal consort.
And she definitely won’t get involved with Murong Jing, the young man she has long been wary of.
But in the spring of the year Night Pearl is to choose a husband, she attends the Hundred Flowers Banquet at the imperial palace. In a quiet corner of the imperial garden, several unruly young noblemen have gathered together.
She stops, not daring to go closer.
Then she unexpectedly hears that unruly young man laugh boldly. “What kind of woman do I like? Someone like Night Pearl.”
(The brash young lord * the ethereal young lady)
“Brother Jing, come on. Night Pearl’s the most beautiful woman in the capital, and she’s got her nose in the air.”
“Then I’ll bet my whole life on it.”
“I came through mountains and rivers for her alone in this life.”
Years later, the person she once feared, hated, and avoided has become the finest man in the world.
