“It’s not easy to keep a supernatural creature around. Ministers, won’t you show a little understanding for me?”

After the ministers leave, Xin Yi tilts his head. He licks his paw and meows curiously.

“Keep a supernatural creature around?” he says. “Who? Why would you have to go out of your way to keep one?”

The attendants around them hear nothing but a string of meows. Only the emperor, who has risen to his feet, hears the words as he picks up the cat and says coolly,

“Keeping just you around is already enough of a headache,” he says. “Where would I find another one?”

Xin Yi nods. His golden collar isn’t fastened tightly, and it slips off before he notices.

He quickly pushes the necklace back onto his head, anxiously rubbing against the emperor’s hand.
