After transmigrating into a book, the person Li Shu paid the most attention to was neither the noble and radiant male lead nor the devoted, steadfast second male lead.
It was Helan Yue.
A supporting character among supporting characters.
The book gave only a few brief lines about his background.
He changed his name as a child and hid in plain sight beside the biological father who had killed his mother. By posing as a capable subordinate, he earned his father's trust and became his right-hand man.
At sixteen, he poisoned his father, seized the power he had built, and spent the next ten years cleaning up the organization and bringing it into the fold, until it became one of the pillars of the righteous path.
He seemed mild-mannered and courteous, but in truth he was incomparably arrogant.
He was always the one who gave others choices. No one could make him choose.
That is, except for his brief encounter with the protagonist's group.
Everyone was poisoned in Yanling Palace, and there were only two bottles of antidote.
Helan Yue never let anyone get ahead of him, and that included claiming the antidote. He seized both bottles, drank one, then calmly declared that he would give everyone present a proper burial.
But only one of the two bottles was actually real.
Naturally, Helan Yue's luck turned terrible in the presence of the protagonist. The bottle he drank was the fake antidote.
In the end, too deeply poisoned to fight back, Helan Yue had his eyes gouged out and his neck broken by the male lead. Then Yanling Palace was razed by a great fire.
From then on, Helan Yue was a cripple, with shattered bones, a disfigured face, and no sight. Everyone who had once loved and admired him abandoned him.
A legendary figure like him should have fallen then and there, leaving others with nothing but sorrow and regret. When they thought of him, they would remember the peerless, graceful genius boy he had once been.
But Helan Yue refused to die.
Even as a cripple, he struggled to survive like a miserable stray dog, and so his old enemies and rivals, whom he had once kept so thoroughly cowed that they dared not utter a word, came after him for revenge.
Among those who came to torment him were also people who had once followed and admired him.
The favored child of heaven became a stray dog anyone could bully, and suffered a darkness beyond ordinary imagination.
The author still glossed over his later experiences in just a few lines. Even so, Li Shu couldn't bring herself to read them closely.
When he reappeared, he had become a freak who always kept his head bowed, with a twisted body and a hideous face.
This freak pulled the strings from behind the scenes, becoming the greatest obstacle and opponent of the male and female leads.
Once he was no longer beautiful, the author barely described Helan Yue's experiences in detail. It was only at the very end of the story, when the leads thought they had won completely, that it was revealed Helan Yue was still alive. He was simply waiting for the moment they were happiest and most relaxed to give them a grand gift in return.
Li Shu admired Helan Yue's character and abilities, and pitied his fate.
After she transmigrated into the book, when she met Helan Yue again, he was sixteen. He had only a few months left before killing his father and beginning the legendary era that would be his own.
All things decline after reaching their peak. Just as Helan Yue reached the height of his glory, his tragic fate was about to befall him.
Li Shu knew her own limits and abilities. She never tried to change the course of the story, let alone change the mind of someone as proud and arrogant as Helan Yue and stop him from going up against the protagonists.
She simply watched the story unfold, occasionally glancing at Helan Yue, who was still an immaculate, graceful young man, with boundless sympathy.
--
Helan Yue had attracted countless gazes in his life. He was always the center of attention, and people studied and imitated his every word and deed.
Those gazes were filled with awe, admiration, delight...
He was other people's beautiful dream, and their nightmare.
But none of those gazes held pity.
The only person in the world who looked at him with pity was Li Shu.
Wherever he went, the pity in her eyes followed him like a shadow.
Whenever that happened, Helan Yue smiled at her a little more brightly.
Of course it was laughable. Who had the right to pity him?
He thought to himself that one day he would gouge out her eyes, so she would never dare pity him again.
Back then, Helan Yue never imagined that one day he would let go of all his superfluous, ridiculous pride, take Li Shu's hand and guide it to his face, pleading with her again and again to show him a little mercy and love him a little more.
But her heart was too wide. She showed concern and compassion for so many people she met along the way. Even when she walked beside him, her gaze would still fall on someone else.
Men and women, countless of them.
A serene heroine who pities every character in the book and never realizes Helan Yue is consumed with jealousy
