Xie Shu had never met a woman as audacious and reckless as Li Tangyan.
Even her father, the Marquis of Huaiyin, treated him with the utmost respect, yet she was always flirting with him.
When he told her he did not want to see her right now, she calmly replied that she would come back later.
When he pulled her hand off his wrist and scolded her for behaving improperly, she innocently explained that she was checking his pulse to make sure he was well.
When someone reached out to shove her, she neither dodged nor resisted. Her first instinct was to find him, adjust the direction of her fall, and make absolutely sure she landed in his arms.
No matter how much he scolded her, she never learned to restrain herself.
After circumstances forced them to marry, he treated her coldly, ignored all her attentions, and casually gave the scented sachet she had painstakingly sewn to a servant boy. He wanted nothing more than for her to stay as far away from him as possible.
When the time was right, he would give her a divorce agreement and be done with it.
That was what he had planned.
But day after day, year after year, he never gave her that divorce agreement. He no longer wanted to pry away the arms she wrapped around him.
At a banquet one day, he overheard someone gossiping: "How did Tangyan end up marrying the head of the Xie family? Didn't she used to like gentle, mild-mannered men best? Young Master Xie is certainly handsome, but with that temper and that sharp tongue, who could put up with him?"
Xie Shu ordered the two of them to drink every drop of the strong liquor on the table. They were husband and wife; these people had no right to discuss them. Besides, did they really think he did not know who filled Li Tangyan's every thought?
That night, when he returned, he waited for her after bathing so they could retire together. As she nestled against him, he gently held her by the shoulders and brushed his cheek against her dark hair, thinking:
She likes me best of all.
But later, he heard something unbelievable from a fortune-teller.
Li Tangyan had married him because of his unusual fate: he brought good fortune to his wife and family, and anyone close to him could share in those blessings. Her mother had been so gravely ill that no medicine could help. To restore her mother's health, Li Tangyan had gone out of her way to win his favor and done everything she could to marry him.
She had married him to bring her mother good fortune.
He refused to believe it. With a cold expression, he demanded an explanation from her, and she agreed.
A few days later, he stood in an empty courtyard, holding the divorce agreement she had signed and stamped with her fingerprint.
For the first time, the usually composed and unflappable young master lost all control.
She had left so decisively, with none of the clinginess he had once known.
So she really did not love him.
Li Tangyan could not understand why her ex-husband, who was always telling her to behave properly, would one day hold her captive in his arms with absolutely no regard for propriety and ask if she liked him.
When she did not say she liked him, he kissed her as tears trembled on his lashes.
The tears fell against her neck, burning hot.
Li Tangyan was a little troubled. She had already arranged to go boating on the lake and admire the moon with her senior fellow disciple. If he did not let go soon, she would be late.
