Third Miss Lin of the Duke's estate has reached marriageable age, and her goal is to choose the gentlest, most handsome young man in the capital to be her husband.
Yet after looking through the list her family prepared, she chose the newly crowned top scholar who wasn't even on it, and whom her family had disqualified in the first round: the young Marquis Xie Tingzhu.
Everyone was astonished and asked why.
"On the day of the parade, I nearly smashed a flowerpot into his head by accident. Not only did Xie Tingzhu not scold me, he thanked me and smiled at me."
"I heard a servant at his home was badly injured. He not only summoned an imperial physician to treat the servant, but gave him medicine even officials wouldn't dare use."
"What moved me most was that one night, I happened to see him standing there, wounded and covered in blood. Even then, he was thinking of shielding me behind him. He was so gentle and kind, he looked like a heavenly being come down to earth!"
After Third Miss Lin finished, her whole family fell silent. She thought they were all taking in just how gentle Xie Tingzhu was, but then she heard her mother say, "My dear, I had the kitchen brew goji berry tea to improve your eyesight, not so you could go blind."
Third Miss Lin: "???"
Third Miss Lin couldn't understand why her whole family kept urging her to get her eyes treated, until she found out:
Before killing someone, Xie Tingzhu would smile, even more happily than when he saw her.
He really had summoned an imperial physician to treat a servant, but he was the one who had ordered someone to beat the servant.
And on the night she thought he was injured, the courtyard beyond the wall was strewn with corpses.
Every one of them had been killed by Xie Tingzhu himself...
Third Miss Lin: "...Xie Tingzhu, you really are a lunatic!"
"What can I do?" Xie Tingzhu bent down, picked up the dagger engraved with her name, and placed it in her palm himself. "Why don't you kill me? Kill me, and better yet, eat my heart. Then I can be with you forever."
[Bonus Scene]
The day Third Miss Lin sent a love letter to Xie Tingzhu's residence, both the Duke's estate and the Marquis's estate felt the sky had fallen.
Lin Father: "Sigh, I can see my daughter's future all the way to the end."
Xie Tingzhu: "What end?"
Third Miss Lin jumped in: "The end that's in your heart."
