Wild Barking [Kowloon Walled City, 1970s Hong Kong]

Kowloon Walled City / Childhood Friends / Delinquent and Good Girl / Saving Each Other / Over-the-Top Drama

She knew her father owed a mountain of debt, so she fled back to Kowloon Walled City once again.

There, she ran into the older boy who had lived next door when they were children.

He had changed a lot. His hair was permed with a center part, his mouth was full of foul language, and he hung around with other delinquents.

She was the daughter of a gambling addict and a mainland woman who had come to Hong Kong. He stood with the others and, just like them, called her a "loser."

She timidly summoned every ounce of courage she had and walked up to him.

Then she called him sweetly, "Big brother."

He nearly lost his balance, his body giving a slight shudder.

Flustered and furious, he stubbed out his cigarette, hurled a few threats at her, and humiliated her.

But when he saw her tears rolling down in great big drops, he ran off in a restless panic.

Later, he stood waiting for her in a narrow alley, a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth.

His eyes fixed on her, as if she were a faithless lover caught red-handed, cornered and expected to give an explanation.

"Missy, you were the one who made the first move."

One day, without giving her a chance to protest, he scooped her up in his arms, ignoring her hoarse screams.

She cried quietly, her eyes as red as a rabbit's.

"Please, let me go. Just say I owe you money. Name your interest, and I'll pay you back little by little."

He gave a brazen whistle and ran his hands over her.

"No can do. I want you to pay me back right now."

He locked her in his home for three days, giving her food and drink while blindfolding her misty eyes.

She was always crying, staining the soft cloth with blotches.

So she never saw the wounds covering his body, or the bloodstains all over the floor.

Naturally, she never saw how utterly wretched he was.

She never saw him kneeling by the door, pathetically begging her.

"I'm willing to take on all her debts."

"I'm willing to die for her."

I only ask that you... let her go.

Give her a bright future.
