Cheng Ruan wakes up inside a farming novel, as a spoiled, troublesome husband who shares his name and is destined to be cannon fodder.
The original Cheng Ruan has a terrible temper and secretly sleeps with a few hooligans from the village, cheating on his husband. He even conspires with them to kill Qin Shanye and seize his property, but in the end, the man can take no more and shoots an arrow through his heart, pinning him to a tree.
When Cheng Ruan transmigrates, he and the man have only recently married. The original is throwing the genuine fur pillow Qin Shanye made for him onto the floor, apparently about to throw a tantrum.
The tall, muscular man stands beside the bed, lips pressed together, his thick brows furrowed as he says nothing.
Remembering how the original was left to rot in the wilderness and devoured by wolves, Cheng Ruan looks around in a panic. His gaze lands on the other bed in the corner of the room.
Then he puts on the air of a spoiled brat and says,
"We're already married, so why are you still sleeping in a separate bed from me?"
Qin Shanye freezes.

The villagers notice that Qin Shanye's little husband has changed.
He used to make a fuss at home nonstop. Aside from a few unscrupulous hooligans who were after his looks, nobody in the village liked him.
But now Cheng Ruan is sweet and well-behaved, with nimble hands that can make all kinds of delicious food no one in the village has ever heard of or seen before.
"That Cheng kid's making food again. What are chocolate cookies? What's chocolate?"
"That stinky fruit her husband brought back the other day has been turned into round cakes. He says they're called cakes. They don't smell as bad now..."
"My kid keeps begging to go buy his pretzels."
"Where did Cheng Ruan learn to make all these strange things...?"
Later, Cheng Ruan opens a teahouse and a restaurant, then expands all the way to the capital.
His business thrives, and his customers are astonishingly varied. High-ranking officials and members of the imperial family, as well as notorious bandit chiefs, are constantly coming and going at his establishments.
Someone privately asks Qin Shanye, "Does your little husband still throw tantrums?"
Qin Shanye merely says, "Yes."
The villagers shake their heads, thinking that old habits die hard. If he had a bad temper before, surely he must be even more fierce now that his business has grown.
Only Qin Shanye knows that Cheng Ruan really does often throw little tantrums with him in private.
But that's only because Qin Shanye keeps him up all night, taking things too far and bullying him mercilessly.
