Prologue Poem [Mended Hearts]

-

Jiang Anshi never expected that she would see Jiang Chuanxu again outside her aunt's operating room.

She held her breath as he explained the risks of the surgery. With every cold word, her heart sank further.

She took a deep breath, her tongue stiff with tension, and somehow managed to speak clearly.

“Please, you have to save my aunt!”

At the sound of her voice, Jiang Chuanxu paused. His long, cool eyes were dark as ink.

He gave her a slight nod and said,

“Don't worry. We'll do everything we can.”

…

The surgery was a success, but Jiang Anshi rarely came to the hospital.

One day, she made sure Jiang Chuanxu wasn't on duty before daring to visit.

Her aunt asked, “Dr. Jiang is a good man, and he's still single. Why not give it another try?”

Jiang Anshi's hand stopped as she peeled the apple. A sharp sting came from her fingertip; she'd cut it open.

She put the finger to her lips and sucked at the wound, then shook her head.

“No.”

At the door, Jiang Chuanxu had been about to make his rounds. He exchanged a glance with his friend, then silently walked away.

His friend stuck up for him, saying all sorts of bad things about Jiang Anshi. When he finally ran out of steam, he suddenly asked,

“When you found out you had to operate on Jiang Anshi's aunt, what were you thinking?”

Half his face hidden in shadow, the man's lashes trembled. Flecks of light glimmered in his dark, unreadable eyes.

“I was scared.”

“Scared that if the surgery failed, she and I really would have no chance.”
