Imposter Beggar County Magistrate, Chen Yuan
The Imperial Court's Elite Assassin Master, Ji Xiqing
Chen Yuan's hometown was ravaged by a flood. The officials did nothing, swallowing the disaster relief funds with a clear conscience and classifying the refugees who starved to death as flood victims.
With no one left in her family, Chen Yuan headed north, begging along the way to stay alive.
On the road, she came across several corpses. She assumed they were starving refugees, only to discover they were the newly appointed county magistrate and his party, on their way to take office.
Seeing an appointment decree and official credentials in his bundle bearing the same name as hers, Chen Yuan was tempted to take his place.
Rather than go hungry and cold, then starve or freeze to death in the wilderness, she might as well have food and drink as an official. At least if she died, it would be on her own terms.
Chen Yuan buried the magistrate and the others. After bowing to them, she slung the dead servant's backpack over her shoulder, pulled out the appointment decree and credentials, and stumbled through the writing. Once she'd grasped the gist, she set off to take up her post.

Chen Yuan hadn't read many books, but she handled cases with skill. Within six months of taking office, she had cleared all the cases her predecessor had left unresolved.
But her good fortune didn't last long. The county magistrate's fiancée showed up.
Chen Yuan had planned to leave at once, but then she remembered a pregnant suspect locked up in jail, whose case was riddled with unanswered questions. She decided to finish the trial before leaving.
Yet the moment the case was concluded, the county magistrate's fiancée appeared before her.
Looking at the fair-skinned, beautiful woman with her soft, gentle face, Chen Yuan was ready to accept her fate when the woman spoke slowly: "You've been at your post for so long, my lord, and haven't even bothered to send me a letter. I thought you'd abandoned me."

Ji Xiqing, leader of the world's greatest assassin organization, had never failed a mission. But after completing another assignment, her master told her that the person she had killed on her previous mission was still alive.
So she went to the small county herself. She wanted to see how a dead person could come back to life.
