In the sixteenth year of Yonghe, disaster descended from the heavens. Nightmare demons appeared, spreading from person to person, and the world fell into chaos.
Li Yin was born unlucky. On the very first day of the nightmare demon disaster, she became one herself, and the only nightmare demon in the world to retain her mind.
Li Yin: No big deal. Surely my luck can't get any worse.
On the third day of the disaster, she ran straight into the world's strongest official exorcist squad.
Li Yin: ...
*
The exorcist squad takes down lesser nightmare demons with a single slash. Li Yin is a coward, so to stay alive, she signs an unfair contract and disguises herself as an ordinary person, tagging along with the big shots.
When they meet a rich person begging for protection, she's the wealthy heiress the team will protect at all costs, while the big shots fight their way through after demanding ten times the price.
When they meet a clingy pest who throws herself at them and won't take no for an answer, she's the team's greatest burden. She cries, makes a scene, threatens to kill herself, and acts like a saintly white lotus Mary Sue, making the big shots look like deranged lunatics.
When they meet a suspicious team of strangers, she's the mastermind secretly controlling the nightmare demons. She helps the ruthless big shots stage a rescue, and somehow gets thanked profusely even though they're robbing people.
She can also be the shield the big shots use to fend off unwanted suitors, the perfect bait for them to fish for supplies, or the other half of a big shot's cross-species romance (?)
Doubt them, understand them, become them, surpass them.
She stops playing it safe, and gets stronger.
Until one day, she runs into the person who once bullied her.
Before she was shoved into a horde of nightmare demons, she heard that person say, "What kind of trash deserves to live?"
Li Yin: ...
Maybe you've heard of letting a tiger return to the mountains.
At long last, freedom, here I come~
Just you wait, you stupid enemy ^_^

#You might not believe it, but the strongest exorcist personally trained me into the Nightmare Demon King.
Low-magic worldbuilding.
An unconventional, ancient-world version of the apocalypse.
The romance-to-plot ratio is probably 40:60, though it could be 30:70.
Theme: Trust is priceless.
