Jian Shi is a ghost cultivator. She cultivates in tatters and dutifully scavenges corpses.
Her master once told her that in their line of work, the worst thing you can do is pick up a rotten corpse. If you bind it with a life contract, then even if the body rots, you won't be able to get rid of it.
Jian Shi took her master's words to heart. She kept a low profile and never bound a contract.
She'd stake out powerful cultivators undergoing tribulations. Corpses struck dead by lightning could be washed and reused.
When enemies challenged each other to a fight to the death, the body of whoever lost could be washed and reused.
When the demon clan competed for the throne, the corpses of the losers could be washed and reused.
Unfortunately, her eye for a corpse wasn't very good.
The sword cultivator she picked up ignored her as she was hunted down, all for the sake of his old sectmates. The human cultivator she picked up abandoned her in the face of mortal danger, all for revenge. The demon cultivator she picked up sold her out, all for the sake of power.
Reincarnated through the Unclean Lands, Jian Shi set out again without a word, carrying the scattered fragments of her memories.
Jian Shi had always thought scavenging corpses was simple: pick up a body, wash it, and use it.
That was until she picked up Jiang Ling.
At first, he was just an ordinary corpse, no different from the others. He was quiet, disobedient, and looked just like a dead man.
Who knew that as she cultivated, the corpse would turn out all wrong? He wanted to share her bed when he slept, share her spoon at mealtimes, and even though he was a corpse, he got jealous of the other corpses she picked up.
The most annoying part was that he kept pestering her to bind a contract with him.
Jian Shi, honest as ever: "Sword cultivators are pretty competitive. I want to pick up two more and compare."
Jiang Ling: "Other sword cultivators only treat their swords like wives. I'm different. I treat you like my wife."
Jian Shi: "I think alchemists and artifact refiners are pretty good too. I should compare prices at a few shops."
Jiang Ling readily obliged: "Here's my level ten alchemist certificate, and here's my level ten artifact-refiner certificate. Level ten isn't my limit, it's the limit of the certification exam."
