Nightmare Town [Mystery]

Travel blogger Meng Shiwuwu came across a short video about an “off-the-beaten-path travel destination.” The masked streamer looked thrilled.

The video introduced a vacation spot on the China-Vietnam border: Xiantao Town.

There was hardly any information about it online.

The video was quickly taken down.

Hoping to draw traffic,

Meng Shiwuwu and her boyfriend Lu Nangu followed a map in a book to Xiantao Town.

They wanted to become the first major influencers to introduce the town.

They drove southwest.

Lu Nangu drove through the night while Meng Shiwuwu navigated.

The radio crackled.

“Xiantao Town, with a long history... static... static... Welcome!”

“Xiantao Town, famous for honey, roses... static... twins, siblings... May all your dreams come true... For the national-standard elixir of immortality, call 444-888...”

“Xiantao Town...”

Meng Shiwuwu: “Did we cross frequencies?”

Lu Nangu: “Switch stations.”

“Crackle...”

“Static...”

After two loud bursts of noise from the traffic broadcast, a hoarse woman’s voice slowly came through the radio:

“I’m Meng Shiwuwu, a travel blogger. Let’s check out an off-the-beaten-path destination together... static... static... Life here is wonderful. My younger sister and her boyfriend will be here soon. Once they arrive, the four of us can... static... die...”

Was that her name? Her voice?

What did she mean, the four of them?

Terrified, Meng Shiwuwu switched off the radio.

The two exchanged a look.

Lu Nangu immediately took the next exit.

They turned back. They couldn’t go any farther.

Fifteen minutes later, a black SUV blocked the highway.

It was the same model and had the same license plate as their car.

The vehicle was empty. The radio transceiver beeped, and the seats were still warm.

It seemed its occupants had only just left.

Meng Shiwuwu decided to call the police.

Suddenly,

the radios in both cars played at once: “The four of us... together forever... Welcome to... Xiantao Town... We’ll be waiting for you in town...”
