Zhong Fu received a warning from the System.
It said he had only three months left to live and needed to start growing spiritual vegetables and herbs immediately to save himself.
Zhong Fu didn't believe it at first, until the System warned him that he would faint in a minute and get a nosebleed in three. Both predictions came true.
That settled it. He promptly quit his job, packed his bags, and headed back to his hometown in the countryside.
Following the System's instructions, Zhong Fu planted vegetables. But when they ripened, they all vanished, leaving him with only a few little seedlings that hadn't matured yet.
Damn it, who stole my vegetables?
These vegetables are supposed to save my life!
With his vegetables gone, Zhong Fu had to plant more. But every time the spiritual plants ripened, they disappeared.
Watching his remaining lifespan dwindle, Zhong Fu set up a bed by the vegetable patch and grabbed a pitchfork, planning to catch that thieving varmint once and for all!
Then he woke up in the middle of the night to see a wounded leopard glaring at him with bared teeth before stealing a vegetable and running off; a one-armed black bear roared at him, grabbed a vegetable, and ran off; a rattlesnake flicked its tongue at him, coiled around a vegetable, and slithered away...
Uh, these varmints are terrifying. There's no way I can handle them.
System: Host, the varmints stealing your vegetables are all spiritual beasts and demons from the mountains. I suggest you go complain to the Mountain God.
Zhong Fu: "You can do that?"
Following the System's directions, he brought his homemade braised pork, roast chicken, steamed fish, and three spiritual plants up the mountain.
The day after he filed his complaint, a handsome, refined young man showed up at his house. He said the Mountain God had sent him to guard the fields. All Zhong Fu had to do was offer him three meals a day and ten spiritual plants a month.
Ever since this man, named Yin Moyan, came to live with him, not a single spiritual plant or vegetable had gone missing from the garden.
Instead, the spiritual beasts and demons that used to steal his vegetables began showing up one by one with gifts, hoping to trade for spiritual plants. They were also all much more polite and friendly toward him.
Overjoyed, Zhong Fu decided to visit the back mountain again to thank the Mountain God.
As he put fruit into a bamboo basket, the man sitting beside him said quietly, "The Mountain God doesn't like vegetarian food. Why not keep offering him braised pork?"
Zhong Fu: "Huh? The Mountain God likes braised pork?"
Yin Moyan casually remarked, "Your cooking is pretty good."
After that, Zhong Fu's spiritual garden grew little by little. It not only saved his life, but also let him trade for all kinds of rare treasures with the demons and spiritual beasts from the back mountain, and even help many people solve their problems.
As his fame grew and his life became more comfortable, the meat-loving fellow at home started acting strangely. His dark eyes were always fixed on Zhong Fu, as if he were seriously figuring out how to take a bite.
One night, just after Zhong Fu had showered, Yin Moyan blocked the bathroom doorway and leaned down to sniff his neck. Zhong Fu went pale with fright and quickly insisted that he didn't taste good.
But Yin Moyan didn't let go. Pinching his soft earlobe, he said, "You smell delicious."
Apparently even more delicious than anything he'd eaten before.
