The Chief Secretary's Wife's Lie-Flat Daily Life

Wen Yun is an unloved daughter born to a family of low-ranking civil officials. Fortunately, she has a fiancé from a powerful, prestigious family. They were engaged as children, and although they have never met, he has sent gifts for every festival year after year, always observing proper etiquette and showing no sign of distaste or regret about the marriage. In private, he has also kept up a steady exchange of letters and gifts with her.

Protected by this engagement, Wen Yun, who can neither do physical labor nor tell one grain from another, has spent her days since transmigrating in comfort, happily lying flat. Everyone in the household says she is blessed, and even her wet nurse says she only needs to wait until she marries him to keep enjoying the good life.

But things did not go as hoped. Her fiancé's true identity was revealed: he was not the biological son of the prestigious family, but a posthumous son brought into the family by a widow when she married in. The capital was in an uproar.

So as not to ruin her life, her fiancé sent several carts of money and valuables to end the engagement, then left the capital alone.

It was a shame, but as a young woman living on her own, not having to marry and suffer was a good thing too.

Who knew that the very next day, she would overhear her legitimate mother and a senior maid discussing her marriage? They planned to pocket the money and send her off as the second wife of an official in his sixties.

Remembering the old man's black-and-yellow front teeth, of which only a few remained when he smiled, Wen Yun did the most ambitious and daring thing of her life.

She chased after her fiancé for more than ten miles, begging him to honor their engagement.

In the fine, slanting rain, a lean, handsome man in a green robe, soaked through, took the jade pendant she offered as proof of their engagement and answered, "All right."

For decades afterward, through storms and ups and downs, even after he rose to the exalted position of Grand Secretary, he never let her suffer the slightest hardship. She spent her whole life enjoying the same carefree, lie-flat days as the third young lady of the Wen family had enjoyed in her boudoir.

So everyone said the third young lady of the Wen family was born lucky, cherished all her life by the chaste and upright Grand Secretary. Only Wen Yun knew that she had made the right bet once, and won herself a lifetime of carefree, lie-flat happiness.
