Non-Benign Dependency

[Bro, it's so hot. Can I use an umbrella?]

[Bro, my stomach hurts. Can I skip drinking with Mr. Li this time?]

[Bro, could you raise my pay by fifty yuan? My back hurts, and I want to buy some pain-relief patches.]

[Bro...]

[Bro...]

[Bro, I'm really going to die this time. Could you come see me one last time...?]

In glittering, decadent Kyoto, a ten-square-meter room in a shared apartment costs 2,500 yuan a month, and a bowl of plain noodles costs twenty-seven. Nan Zhe earns a salary of 3,500 yuan and has been working as the little assistant to superstar Qin Shu for six years.

Before meeting Qin Shu, Nan Zhe was pampered and cared about his looks. After meeting him, he could do any dirty or exhausting job.

The truth was, he knew everything. His brother didn't love him. He was just a substitute, a useful tool, an obedient bedmate, a freeloader who threw himself at him without asking for money. He didn't dare bring it up, afraid his brother would leave him if he did. But he still wanted his brother to treat him well...

Qin Shu received a text from his assistant and smiled scornfully. He simply didn't believe someone so full of life could die. The kid had probably learned to throw tantrums to get his way, so he decided to ignore him and wait for him to come crawling back on his own.

The assistant knew nothing of this. He waited at their agreed meeting place, hoping to see Qin Shu one last time.

But an earthquake struck that day. He was so sick he couldn't even run away. The building sank into the ground, and no trace of the people inside remained.

Later, Qin Shu spent seven days and seven nights alone in the ruins. When people next heard news of him, it was that he had died...
