My Ex-Husband Grew Cat Ears

[Third-person narration. I've hit a few snags, so I'll think about when to start posting!]

You are an ordinary doctor.

Single, divorced once, no children.

That brief marriage came from a big-data match made by the system, with no emotional foundation to speak of.

Your ex-husband was a textbook social elite: always in a suit, with slicked-back hair and gold-rimmed glasses, cool and rational.

You were a good match, but life together was dull. Eventually, you suggested separating. He readily agreed, and you had no contact after the divorce.

One day, your ex-husband suddenly called, saying he wanted to ask you about a health problem.

When you met, he was hesitant. He led you somewhere secluded and finally took off his hat.

A pair of cat ears had appeared on the man's head.

You stared in shock.

Your ex-husband glanced at you, then lowered his eyes in shame. "This... what kind of illness is it?"

The two of you became part of each other's lives again.

As time went by, you began to notice something was off.

Your ex-husband seemed to prefer simple T-shirts and jeans to suits.

Instead of slicking back his hair and wearing gold-rimmed glasses, he more often let his hair down. Beneath his messy fringe was a pair of innocent, fawn-like eyes.

And unlike the cool, rational social elite, your ex-husband was remarkably empathetic and seemed to be a crybaby. He could go through a whole box of tissues while watching a tearjerker old movie.

Thinking back to the way he used to be, you shuddered.

"Which one is the real you?"

You asked your ex-husband, but a fluffy cat tail curled around your wrist.

"Which one do you like?" The man's face flushed as he let you gently stroke his tail. It took him a while to finish speaking. "Whichever one you like... that's who I'll be."

When you didn't answer, he undid his collar himself, revealing the cat bell beneath it, and pleaded in a quiet voice:

"Will you marry me again? Or what kind of person do you like? Tell me... I can be anything."
