Chu Qing, a baby dragon from the demon realm, had to go through trials in the human world to transform into an adult.
It had originally planned to visit an ancient mortal realm and become a little river dragon king, protecting the local people and earning enough merit to complete its task.
But it never expected a mishap during its journey to send it to the modern mortal world instead.
The bad news: It couldn't become a Dragon King here, because people believed in science.
The good news: These people who believed in science also believed in fortune-telling.
Was metaphysics the final frontier of science?
Chu Qing: Fine, this is my old trade, too. I can make a living at it.
On the first day at its fortune-telling stall, it charged twenty yuan per reading, but nobody came.
A certain old man said, "Young people have arms and legs. Why not do something useful instead of swindling people? And you don't even have the brains to do it properly."
Only after Chu Qing looked into the going rates did it learn that other fortune-tellers charged a hundred yuan at a minimum. Tourists assumed anyone charging less was a fraud.
On the third day at its stall, it charged a hundred yuan per reading, and customers came.
A certain college student said, "Master, I'll give you two hundred yuan to be my backdrop for two hours."
Chu Qing stood in the background, taking photos with a stranger who had come to sightsee. Twenty yuan a picture, and business was booming.
The college student made a cool six hundred yuan and happily went home.
On the tenth day at its stall, it charged five hundred yuan per reading and waited for someone destined to come.
A certain middle-aged man said, "Young fella, you've got a respectable look. How about working as a security guard in my apartment complex?"
Chu Qing wasn't tempted.
"Six thousand a month, meals and accommodation included, social insurance, and weekends off."
"...That sounds pretty good."
Chu Qing thought its time in the human world would end with a security job, and that it would live out an utterly ordinary life.
It never imagined that this was only the beginning.
A skull that went "boo-hoo" while clinging to a rich man's window in the middle of the night;
A brat who carried his own head around and kicked it all over the apartment complex;
A young man who turned into a husky on nights of the full moon;
A jittery old lady who saw ghosts whenever she got scared...
Chu Qing: Business is here. I'll take some part-time work on my days off. Let's go!
