The Duke of Zhenguo's household was falsely accused of plotting rebellion. To escape disaster, the eldest princess's mother married Sese off to Chen Xuan, the son of a merchant.
Raised in pampered comfort, Sese was unhappy with her rough, taciturn husband.
Chen Xuan was meticulous in everything, even carefully calculating the cost of firewood, rice, oil, and salt.
She wanted a cat and some flowers to brighten up her days, but Chen Xuan fenced off part of the courtyard to raise chickens and ducks and planted vegetables, telling her they would keep her occupied and give her something tasty to eat.
At night, whenever they shared a bed, he ignored every excuse she made to avoid him. He said he didn't make deals at a loss.
Sese hated Chen Xuan and had even thought of running away, but he caught her and brought her back.
Then one day, she discovered Chen Xuan's secret. He had used all the money he'd saved to recruit soldiers, and all the grain he'd stored had become supplies for the rebel army.
So Chen Xuan was the real rebel.
To avenge her parents, Sese decided to endure the humiliation and keep being his wife.
Gradually, Sese realized just how good this man was.
Though he was stingy, he had never skimped on her. Her food, clothes, and other necessities were better than those of any of her sisters-in-law.
He would pick the most beautiful peach blossom of spring for her, and clumsily try to make her smile when she was sad.
When the imperial court sent people to arrest her, Chen Xuan protected her with his own body, willing to give his life for hers.
After Chen Xuan died, Sese became a lovely young widow. Chen Xuan left her a generous inheritance, and with her brothers-in-law's support, she suffered little for the rest of her life, aside from being terribly lonely.
One night, Sese woke from a dream and found herself reborn on the day she had eloped with the poor scholar next door. Chen Xuan had just caught them in the act.
For the first time, the usually taciturn man flew into a rage. "You like this kind of cowardly weakling who pushes you out in front whenever trouble comes?"
Sese couldn't meet his eyes.
"What if I said I only like you, you strong, sturdy man? Would you believe me?"
One-on-one romance, married first and in love later, both leads are chaste, happy ending.
