The Dowager Empress Has Good News

I entered the palace at fifteen. I was so lucky that I became the Empress Dowager the very night I arrived.

Life hasn’t been easy for me these past years. To outsiders, I look all-powerful. Once I sit behind that curtain, even the young emperor has to treat me with respect.

But I have my troubles, too.

Every day, I have to pretend to be old. When I see a handsome young man, all I can do is drool a little. I absolutely mustn’t reach out and seduce him.

I suppose even Heaven couldn’t stand watching me suffer, because at the Qionglin Banquet, I met Pei Yuanhuai, the young, handsome top scholar, so fresh-faced you could practically squeeze water from him.

I lost my head once and had him dragged into the Palace of Compassion and Tranquility. Then, feeling rather pleased with myself, I asked him, “I hear that human nature is evil from birth.”

Pei Yuanhuai trembled like a leaf. “I, I have never heard that, Your Majesty.”

I lifted his chin and teased, “Then let me teach you what it means to see the worst in people.”

Later, I got tired of him and, in a last act of conscience, set him free.

But I never expected that one day he would rebel.

When he stormed into the Palace of Compassion and Tranquility, I was drinking medicine for my pregnancy.

He gripped my chin and scolded me coldly. “Wicked empress, you have bewitched the court. Today, I will carry out Heaven’s justice in your place.”

I calmly stroked my belly and smiled at him without a hint of emotion. “I’m pregnant.”
