My next novel is The Natural Enemy Caught Her Fish Tail. The blurb is at the very bottom~
[The female lead, a Sun Patrol Deity who hasn't slept in nine thousand years and suffers from severe insomnia]
[The male lead, an aloof High God who gets his sleep disturbed every night, but ends up loving it]
Tormented by insomnia, Fu Song has not had a single good night's sleep in nine thousand years.
As a Sun Patrol Deity, she patrols the mortal world by day, records good and evil, protects the people from demons, and sometimes escorts lost children home.
When she can't sleep at night, she disguises herself as a mortal and heads to a tavern that never closes, playing drinking games with a bunch of night owls.
When dawn comes, Fu Song drags her exhausted yet wired body back to her patrol duties.
Her close friend, the Spring Goddess, fears she'll work herself to death and offers some advice: "Spring is here. How about going down to the mortal realm to find a bedmate? Get intimate, and maybe you'll finally be able to sleep well."
Taking a gambler's chance on the idea, Fu Song soon sets her sights on a white-robed gentleman who teaches at an academy in Jiangnan.
He keeps a regular schedule, putting out the lights at the hour of the Dog. He's a delight to look at when he sleeps, and he makes not a sound, quiet as a cool and aloof immortal banished from heaven.
The first time she lies beside him, Fu Song tries putting an arm around his waist and nestling into the crook of his neck.
She catches the clean, crisp scent on him, and suddenly feels drowsy. Her body seems to sink into cotton, and the mental anguish caused by her insomnia vanishes completely.
Fu Song sleeps soundly until dawn.
The Spring Goddess's method really works!
From then on, Fu Song often comes by at night.
She's usually on time, though she is late once or twice.
When she is late, she assumes the white-robed gentleman has already gone to bed, only to find him still reading by lamplight.
By a strange coincidence, the moment she arrives, he puts out the light.
Fu Song can't help feeling uneasy. It's as though he's specifically waiting for her.
But she has clearly concealed her presence. A mortal couldn't possibly sense her.
It must be because her daytime duties are so tiring that she's imagining things!
After sharing more than a hundred spring nights, Fu Song gets a sudden urge to see what the white-robed gentleman is like during the day.
To her surprise, she discovers him spending time with a young woman.
The young woman brings him lunch, and he smiles at her, even giving her a delicate hairpin.
The woman must be someone he likes.
Fu Song quietly decides it's time to find a new bedmate.
-
The High God Zhao Yin descends to the mortal realm on a mission. While undercover, every night after he puts out the lights, a woman comes to share his bed.
And she's actually a member of the Celestial Court.
She sleeps like an octopus. Every time he moves her arms and legs away, she wraps herself around him again.
One night, she wears him down so badly that he tries to wake her. Instead, she nuzzles into his arms in her sleep and cries, "Hold me, please..."
Only then does he learn that she suffers not only from insomnia, but from frequent nightmares as well. A good night's sleep is a luxury to her.
The hand he had raised to shake her awake settles on her back instead, turning into an embrace of surrender.
Just as he begins to get used to having her around, she stops coming.
The High God Zhao Yin waits night after night, but she never appears.
Even after his mission is complete, she still doesn't show up.
Then he hears from the Spring Goddess that Fu Song has found a new bedmate.
The usually cool, composed, unflappable High God Zhao Yin can no longer sit still.
Coming soon: The Natural Enemy Caught Her Fish Tail
[An eccentric, clever, but not too scheming, spoiled little mermaid x a sickly, blind, outwardly gentle but secretly mad Deputy Commissioner of the Demon Suppression Bureau]
Fan Song is the last of the merfolk. Ever since she was old enough to remember, all her kin have been gone. She has never had enough to eat or warm clothes to wear, and has spent her life in the East Sea as a drifter, scavenging for junk.
The year she comes of age, she finally saves enough money to buy herself a coral garden as a new home.
On the day she moves in, she discovers by chance that the back garden of her coral home connects directly to the residence of an unfamiliar gentleman on land.
It is an ordinary midday. Sunlight slants into the courtyard, where a gentleman sits on a warm couch, his eyes covered with white gauze. He wears a frost-blue robe embroidered with cranes. Beneath the gauze is a cool, weary, composed face. His presence is commanding, yet there is a fragile quality to him, as if he could break at any moment.
The gentleman seems not to notice Fan Song's intrusion and continues slowly turning the pages of his book.
Fan Song cautiously props herself up against the wall. Once she confirms that the gentleman is blind, she relaxes and begins walking on her legs, not very skillfully, as she explores the residence.
The place is clean and tidy, with many spacious, warm rooms. The kitchen is full of delicious food, and the storeroom is packed with medicinal herbs and magical treasures.
More importantly, there aren't many people around. After looking the place over, Fan Song decides she likes it.
She starts working out a little plan in her head.
She can sneak in here to eat and stay at night, then wait for the gentleman to go to work during the day before stealing things from the storeroom and reselling them in the East Sea.
There are so many gold and silver treasures in there. If she just takes a tiny bit to support herself, surely the gentleman won't notice?
With her little scheme ticking away, Fan Song openly begins living with the gentleman.
The gentleman lives simply, and spends most of his time in the study after work.
Fan Song watches him in secret for a whole month. Though he's frail, he's ruthless and efficient when killing demons. Every night, as she sleeps in the west wing, she hears demons and ghosts begging for mercy. They all call the man "Deputy Commissioner Luo."
Fan Song gradually grows uneasy. When she gets a chance to ask around, she learns the truth:
The gentleman she's been living with for so long is actually Ji Yuan, the Deputy Commissioner of the Demon Suppression Bureau, feared by every demon and ghost.
When Fan Song learns the truth, her whole world collapses.
The Demon Suppression Bureau is her natural enemy.
She has been freeloading on Ji Yuan's food and lodging, and has stolen a great deal of his property.
Once he finds out, how could he possibly spare her?
Out of remorse, Fan Song painfully weaves a quilt from mermaid silk and gives it to Ji Yuan, hoping he'll sleep warmly at night.
And hoping he'll let her go.
Unfortunately, when Fan Song sneaks into his bedroom to deliver the quilt, Ji Yuan happens to return from work.
A man and a mermaid meet face to face.
Thinking that Ji Yuan is blind and can't see her, Fan Song simply freezes beside the wardrobe.
But while changing, Ji Yuan drops his sash. He bends to pick it up, and as he feels around, he touches Fan Song's scaled feet, which are almost transformed into a fish tail.
Fan Song's heart leaps into her throat.
Ji Yuan grabs her ankle and never lets go.
Theme: A woman should be self-reliant
