Bai Qingqing fled the Qin state with her brother, Gai Nie, who was taking Tianming with him. At the Mechanism City, she ran into an old acquaintance she had not seen in years.
Bai Qingqing never expected that the young Master Zhang she had met in Han years ago, when she and her brother accompanied King Ying Zheng on a visit, would grow up to become Zhang Liang, one of the famous Three Confucian Heroes of the land of Qi and Lu. He was also reputed to be the sharpest mind in the Seven States.
After the Mechanism City fell, Bai Qingqing joined the Mohists in escaping through a secret passage, taking a small boat down the underground river. Tianming was unconscious, and her brother had to look after him, so Bai Qingqing took a boat by herself.
"Miss Qing'er."
A clear voice, laced with amusement, startled Bai Qingqing awake. Only then did she realize she had been dozing off and had nearly fallen into the river.
Bai Qingqing turned around, her cheeks flushing. Her almond-shaped eyes slowly widened. "Young Master Zhang? Zifang!"
Excerpt from Bai Qingqing's story
When Bai Qingqing regained consciousness, she thought she could hear a lilting flute melody by her ear. She curled her lips into a smile. She remembered now.
Back then, when she and her brother accompanied King Ying Zheng to Han, she passed by a private residence one day and heard a lilting melody come from inside.
Just as she was about to leave, the window beside her suddenly blew open. She raised a hand to shield her face. When she lowered it, her gaze met a pair of gentle, handsome eyes.
A moment later, her cheeks turned red, and she fled in a panic, clutching her sword. Only afterward did she learn that he was Zhang Liang, grandson of Han Chancellor Zhang.
Excerpt from Zhang Liang's story
"Qing'er, do you know? I was overjoyed when I saw you again in the courtyard behind Zilan Pavilion.
Years passed, and just when I thought we would never meet again in this life, I saw you at the Mechanism City."
Bai Qingqing stared at him, stunned. He rested his head beside hers and spoke softly. "I have lost so much in this life: my family, my friends, my homeland.
When my homeland was falling apart, I met the woman I loved. After losing my homeland and wandering from place to place, I thought I would never see her again.
Years later, just as I was preparing to spend the rest of my life alone, she appeared. I was overwhelmed with joy, but at the same time, I was unbearably sad, because I couldn't promise her anything or give her a stable life."
Bai Qingqing suddenly smiled and gently touched his face. "And what about now?"
