“Matilda of England, a fatherless orphan, an heir cast aside, a princess coveted by countless men. Yet she would ultimately become the mistress of Europe. Though her mortal body would one day decay, her fame would be celebrated for all eternity.”

“She wore three crowns, and her footsteps crossed the mountains of Iberia and the walls of Jerusalem. Christians and Saracens alike bowed before her. No one could surpass her: not the king of the Franks, the Ayyubid sultan, the pope of Rome, or even her husband, who astonished the world.”

“Her husband and father were both extraordinary men, pioneers who defied God and legendary heroes. They helped make her who she was, but she did not achieve greatness by relying on them alone.”

“She is the daughter of Jerusalem, the immortal queen and empress upon the throne.”

Before you stands Matilda I: daughter of Richard I, the Lionheart; Queen of England, Queen of Navarre, Queen of Ireland, Empress of the Holy Roman Empire, Queen of Sicily; Duchess of Normandy, Aquitaine, and Swabia; Countess of Anjou, Maine, and Burgundy; conqueror of France, liberator of Iberia, defender of the Holy City, and founder of European civilization!

The third installment in the Plantagenet series. Her titles and achievements may keep growing. The heroine is the daughter of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria, and the hero is Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire. They’re all familiar faces.

This is not a typical power fantasy about a strong heroine. She is a native of her world with no golden finger, relying entirely on her own efforts. Expect plenty of angst, and no one but the heroine is guaranteed to make it through to the end unscathed. The romance takes up a larger share of the story than in the previous books, and the relationships among the heroine, the second heroine, the hero, and the second hero are very complicated. But the only mutual love between any of them is between the hero and heroine. Controversial plot points will be flagged a few chapters in advance.
