In his first year of high school, Yukimura Seiichi was dragged by an upperclasswoman into a debate as a last-minute substitute. The topic was romance, and since he was good-looking, he could put the other side on the back foot both physically and mentally.
The upperclasswoman patted his shoulder, full of confidence. "Seiichi! Make them fall in love with you right away! Use all your charm and win them over!"
Yukimura Seiichi smiled wryly. "I'd rather not."
Their topic was: If you had a superpower that could make the person you loved fall in love with you, would you use it?
Yukimura Seiichi had never been very interested in events like this. That changed when a girl with twin braids and glasses suddenly stood up, pointed at him with a finger in a rather rude manner, and asked, "To the second speaker on the opposing team: Suppose I suddenly used a superpower today to make you, a person who doesn't even know me, fall in love with me. What would your first thought be in that moment?"
At a debate, he had to answer the question. Yukimura Seiichi hesitated. "...That would be nice?"

The first time Yukimura Seiichi saw her was in the staff room before he took a leave of absence in his third year of middle school. The girl with black-rimmed glasses was arguing expressionlessly with a female teacher.
It seemed like a common enough sight. The other teachers in the staff room watched the scene in the corner with amusement, and nobody intervened.
Yukimura Seiichi heard the girl say, "What you're doing and saying is wrong. Hegel once said, 'Practice not only has universal validity, but absolute reality as well.' Each of us has the ability and the duty to put into practice the things we want to do..."
Yukimura Seiichi understood every word she said, but couldn't make sense of even one short sentence when they were put together. Her words only brought bursts of laughter from the staff room.
Only later did he learn that she was Amano Rei from Class 3-C.
A strange girl who had not spoken a single word to anyone at school for a whole year in her first year of middle school, and was about as antisocial as they came...
Content warnings:
1. The debate is only portrayed at a very amateur level. This is a high school romance, with no explicit content.
2. The heroine really is mentally ill, gloomy, and self-centered, and she genuinely wants to improve and make new friends.
