Maven Garcia is a dreamweaver.
Since humanity first developed psychic abilities half a century ago, he is the first dreamweaver whose powers are strong enough to affect reality.
Then one day, the Nightmare Game descends. Anyone who falls asleep is inevitably dragged into the game, and no one can escape.
Fail to clear a game, and the price is brain death. Retired soldiers and police officers with formidable combat skills, genius hackers with extraordinary intellect, and mystery fans with incredible deductive abilities alike struggle to protect themselves in this bizarre and unpredictable nightmare world.
In this game, having a dreamweaver on your side is like having a cheat code.
And Maven Garcia, nicknamed the "god-tier dreamweaver" by his chuunibyou online fans, is the biggest cheat code of all.
But the lucky players who get matched with him haven't even had a chance to cheer before they realize...
Why isn't this man anything like the refined and courteous Mr. Garcia from the stories?!!!
The handsome young man, expressionless and cold-eyed, slaughters anything in his path through the nightmare world, whether god or demon, wreaking havoc everywhere he goes.
His teammates cower behind him, NPCs run at the sight of him, and dungeon bosses are driven to the brink of madness. Not one of them will let him into their dungeon, until the mastermind is forced to come after him in person, only to discover they can't beat him!
In the end, Maven stands smiling, one foot on the blood-spitting mastermind, a long blade conjured from psychic energy pressed against "their" throat. He asks, very kindly:
"Tell me, where have you taken my Banwu?"
*
Maven has never told anyone that when he first awakened his psychic powers at the age of five and entered a dream, he met a child in the mist, covered in wounds and with vacant eyes.
The child, about his age, had fog-gray hair and eyes and couldn't remember their own name, so Maven named them Banwu.
He knew Banwu wasn't human, because when he woke from the dream, no one else could see them.
Maven never asked about Banwu's past. He only knew that Banwu was his most important friend.
Banwu stayed by his side for twenty whole years.
But from the day the Nightmare Game descended, Banwu disappeared.
The usually gentle and courteous Maven, his eyes bloodshot, watches as a dungeon monster lunges at him and bares a ferocious grin.
He has to find Banwu.
It doesn't matter whether Banwu is human or what their past may be.
He wants his Banwu back.
Dungeon monsters? Alien life-forms?
Hah. If they dare get in his way, they can just try to stop him.
