Plotting to Become Emperor

Pei Yu ascended the throne in his youth, quelled internal strife, conquered the surrounding lands, reformed the government, and ushered in the Great Liang golden age.

He never took an empress or any concubines.

Rumor had it that an ice coffin lay in a secret chamber in his bedchamber. His deceased wife, the body of Fang Hui, the rebel general of Great Liang, rested inside.

Unofficial histories say that early in the Jingyuan era, the frail, powerless young ruler used himself as bait to tame Fang Hui, the mad dog who bit anyone he saw.

Once he had power in his hands, the first blade he turned was against the abandoned hound, whose achievements had grown too great for his own good.

The warhorse wore armor, but the general never came home.

The people lining the road cursed him, denouncing him as a traitor.

Pei Yu stood atop the city gate tower, gazing into the distance. Snow piled on his shoulders, and he remained silent for a long time.

Back to the beginning of the Jingyuan era.

Pei Yu had just ascended the throne. Civil and military officials watched him like tigers eyeing their prey, while the warlords on every side stirred with ambition. He stood alone, unable to hold the line.

Fang Hui first came to the palace to pay his respects, speaking recklessly and making improper advances toward him.

Pei Yu looked at the defiant young wolf before him, smiled, and patted the throne beneath him. "Come and try."

He was a wicked ghost who had crawled out of hell.

He came to find his king and tell him that he had no regrets.

"I am willing to die for you."
