Riding with the Phoenix

Zhou Xue, a Daoist prodigy who ascended as a young girl, had barely come down from the mountain when she saw a world devastated by hardship. Here, the strong preyed on the weak, and even immortals were no exception. After ascending, she endured the war between immortals and demons. Her power was too weak, and when she saved a mortal, snakes, insects, rats, and ants burrowed into her heart. As she was about to die, she saw a woman in red standing before her. Unable to help herself, she grabbed the trailing hem of the woman's red gauze skirt. That single tug bound them together for a lifetime.

She didn't want to be favored, so the woman took her place. She didn't want blood on her hands, so the woman killed everyone who had bullied her.

Holding a curved blade, drenched in scarlet beneath the solitary moon, the woman reached out to her and said, "Zhou Xue, you need only live as a carefree wanderer in this life. I'll bear every sin of slaughter. I will always be your guardian deity, your protective charm."
