What's wrong, kid? Have you realized you're not the protagonist of your own life?
A brush with death put something new in Lu Ren's head: a piece of text.
His world had been transmigrated into so many times it was full of holes. There were five, six, seven, eight protagonists, just at a glance.
Protagonist One: A cultivator with an old man living in a jade pendant.
Protagonist Two: A humanoid weapon in a cyberpunk setting.
Protagonist Three: A superhuman corrupted by cosmic horror.
And Lu Ren was none of them.
He was a nameless passerby in Protagonist Seven's growth story, a sacrificial nobody who, out of gratitude for the protagonist saving his life, handed over his parents' keepsakes.
That was how it was supposed to go. That was how it should have gone.
Only this time, the protagonist arrived too late.
Sitting amid the ruins, Lu Ren smiled. What was the point of being the one who waited to be rescued?
Taking out every protagonist and becoming the world's one and only protagonist, that was what would be interesting.
Claws tore through the sky. A massive shape loomed in the fog, its tentacles lashing out. Mecha cannons roared, while cultivators rode their swords through the air in the bitter wind.
Everyone watched each other warily, ready to fight over who would claim the world as their own.
In an atmosphere so tense the very air seemed frozen, a voice suddenly rang out:
"I only wanted to be an ordinary person."
"But you made it impossible for ordinary people to survive."
A terrifying pressure descended as Lu Ren appeared. His expression was indifferent, his voice brimming with murderous intent. "So..."
"You deserve to die."
The chaos came to an end, and the world began to rebuild its order. But whenever people spoke of Lu Ren, they all had the same thing to say:
"Lu Ren is the least merciful of them all."
Lu Ren met Yu Tingnian while fighting off a parasite. His reason dissolved into nothing, and his body was ruled by desire.
The trembling boy was enveloped by a terrifying, inhuman figure. Lu Ren leaned down and breathed in his scent. "So beautiful..."
In the darkness of night, a black bone spur lightly brushed the corner of the boy's eye, trying to wipe away his tears.
But the boy flinched and tried to dodge, and the bone spur cut him by accident.
Lu Ren drew back the jagged bone spur and licked the wound at the corner of Yu Tingnian's eye.
"Niannian..."
He sounded almost like he was sighing, yet utterly entranced, as he sucked away the bright red drop of blood.
From then on, Yu Tingnian became a cradle for Lu Ren's evil thoughts, the home of all his love and desire.
