Qi Shi first met Du Yingyu while making a food delivery.
At three in the morning, she was rushing to complete an order when she accidentally crashed into the CEO’s MAYBACH S680.
The food she was delivering was scattered across the ground, the customer was demanding to know where it was, and the driver stopped her and called the police. Ms. Du stood by the roadside, pale-faced and holding her arm, as if none of it had anything to do with her.
But just as Qi Shi was on the verge of breaking down in tears, Ms. Du spoke up in her leisurely manner.
“Pay for the damages in full, or become my exclusive delivery rider and bring me food every day. I’ll pay you five times your current salary. It’s your choice.”
Qi Shi couldn’t afford the repair bill, and the high salary was irresistible. She wasn’t stupid; she knew she had no choice.
Who knew being an exclusive delivery rider would be a job fit for no human? She had to keep her phone on twenty-four hours a day and deliver anywhere in the city, no matter the distance. The CEO’s meal instructions took up fourteen lines. Get anything wrong, and they docked her pay. Deliver late, and they docked her pay.
Qi Shi slammed the table in fury. “How is this a food delivery job?!”
Ms. Du replied unhurriedly, “Of course I didn’t hire you just to deliver food.”
“Then what else did you hire me for?” Qi Shi asked, puzzled.
“What else? To see me off when I die.” Du Yingyu still looked completely unconcerned, speaking as calmly as if discussing the weather. “I’ll double your salary again. In three months, you won’t have to deliver anything anymore.”
“...”
Fine. As long as the pay was good, seeing someone off when they died was acceptable too.
Qi Shi made the transition from food delivery rider to deathbed attendant without a second thought.
Only later did Qi Shi learn that their first meeting had been staged, that Ms. Du had deliberately engineered the crash, and that the exclusive delivery job had been a spur-of-the-moment excuse made up by Du Yingyu.
Only the seeing-her-off-when-she-died part had been real.
“How could you do this to me?” Qi Shi rubbed at the tears glistening in the corners of her eyes and demanded in a trembling voice, “Du Yingyu, this is the second time. The second time you’ve wanted me, then left me behind.”
For the first time in her life, the usually calm and composed CEO panicked. Ignoring Qi Shi’s struggles, she pulled her into her arms. “I won’t leave you behind. This time, I won’t leave you, even if I die.”
