Don't Be Nice to Me

Don’t come near me... and don’t be so gentle with me.

Lin Xingjun’s world was cold and precise.

Just as every line on an architectural blueprint had to be perfect, he didn’t want his life to stray from its planned course.

He was used to being alone, used to rejecting everyone’s kindness.

Until Xia Yunmu came along.

Xia Yunmu was the light of the campus.

Gentle and dazzling, yet caught up in rumors and gossip.

“I heard he makes a habit of stealing other people’s girlfriends.”

“He seems so gentle on the surface. Who knows what he’s really like behind closed doors?”

Lin Xingjun should have stayed away from trouble like that.

But Xia Yunmu kept setting warm milk in front of him, and patiently teaching him how to adjust his camera angle, again and again.

The walls he had built began to waver.

“Why are you so nice to me?”

“Because...” Xia Yunmu smiled. “The way you clearly need it but keep turning it down makes me worry about you.”

Lin Xingjun hated feeling out of control.

He hated how Xia Yunmu’s gentleness made his heart race, and how he had started looking forward to every time they met.

What he hated most was that when he heard the rumors slandering Xia Yunmu, he felt, for the first time, the urge to protect someone.

“Don’t listen to what they say.” He grabbed Xia Yunmu by the wrist, his voice low and hoarse. “I believe you.”

“Don’t be nice to me...”

“I can’t stop now.”

You are the one uncontrollable variable in the precisely calculated life I’ve planned.
