Blurb One: From the perspective of a genuinely unwell protagonist
Eris wakes up with amnesia and discovers that not only is he being held captive, but he can hear objects talking.
A strange bat-man comes by every day to check on him. His bat cape yells: [What the hell is a recovery room doing in the Batcave?]
[Oh, I'm a delicious little treat.] The cookies Alfred brought over laugh on the plate. [Are you going to stuff me in your mouth, prisoner? You should be in Arkham Asylum living next door to the Joker, not enjoying cookies here!]
Dick hands him a cup, and the hot chocolate inside sighs dramatically: [Look at you, once a little lord, one of the second-generation Robins, and now a prisoner. Seriously, buddy, do you want to stay in the Batcave forever?]
The pills start shouting too: [Get out and take revenge on the person who turned you into this mess! Then go visit Jason's grave, and check on your old man and the new Robin Tim, still out on patrol! Anything's better than playing good little boy here. Oh, you can share your cookies with them too.]
Eris swallows it in one gulp, and the voice vanishes.
So he has a father who goes on night patrol, a dead brother, a new brother, and another brother who keeps giving him hot chocolate that insults him.
A huge family. He wonders whether he was any good at handling family relationships before he lost his memory.
But he doesn't have to worry about that anymore. He can't stay at home sponging off his family forever. He needs to become an independent, productive person.
Starting with figuring out how to get out of this recovery room in the Batcave.
Blurb Two: A close-up from the unlucky love interest's perspective
Jason's last memory before he died is the Joker's shrill laughter, and Eris swinging a knife at an innocent person. After coming back to life, he finds the Batcave and sees Eris living in a makeshift recovery room.
He talks to the air, grabs the bat's cape and yells, "Shut up," tells Alfred's cookies to get away from him, and thinks Dick's hot chocolate is going to swallow him.
Exactly as the Joker promised: Your partner, your brother, the other Robin will be tortured into a pitiful little lunatic.
But he's alive, and he's safe. Very safe.
So Jason leaves Gotham. After years of traveling and training, he returns and wants to see Eris again, but Eris is gone.
In just a few months, Eris has escaped the Batcave and become the Grave Digger, a killer who kills to stop killers. He's fought his brothers and his old man all over Gotham, and his place of confinement has changed from the Batcave to Arkham Asylum.
By the time Jason arrives, most of the prison has been blown up. The rain hides Eris's gaunt frame. With a crazed smile on his face, he stands on the rooftop humming a lullaby.
"...Jason." When he sees Jason, he opens his arms, knife in hand, and repeats the name. "Jason, Jason. Will you give me a hug?"
All right. Jason walks through the rain and hugs him. Now Batman has two people to worry about, he thinks.
[Eris brings Jason to Wayne Manor, and Red Hood brings the Grave Digger home too.]
Content warnings:
* The male protagonist really is mentally ill, very much so. He and Jason took turns being the second-generation Robin.
* They work through their trauma as they fight and hug it out as family. Becoming an antihero will definitely lead to conflict with the family, but after more fighting and scolding, they'll still drag him home for Christmas cookies (?).
* I haven't thought of anything else. I'll add more if I do.
Theme: Family is a treasure forever
