Bo Xiling grew up among the Miao in the southern borderlands, cut off from the outside world. Ever since her birth, the shaman had prophesied that she was destined to face a calamity, and that she would have to seek a way to overcome it beyond the borders of her people.
On her twentieth birthday, she suddenly dreamed of the calamity awaiting her.
In the dream, the world she lived in was a book. The heroine was the young lady of the Shen family of Beizhou, while Bo Xiling was the illegitimate daughter the Shen family had lost and left behind.
The Shen family reluctantly acknowledged her as their daughter, but she clung to her mother’s dying wish. She wouldn’t let go, knew no contentment or boundaries, and the Shen family finally had enough and cast her out.
In the end, she was deceived and died in a heavy snowstorm.
Bo Xiling felt that the person in her dream was nothing like her. Still, for the sake of the prophecy and to confirm what she had seen, she set out to leave the mountains.
But she had barely taken her first step when poverty brought her to her knees.
Desperate to make a living, she had no choice but to join a survival variety show after a talent scout talked her into it.
The show became a huge hit on its first day. Someone noticed the girl in an overlooked corner, dressed in traditional Miao clothing and beautiful in a unique way, sitting quietly and listening attentively to the program introduction.
[Wow, a fresh face in showbiz? I need to know everything about this girl in five minutes!]
[So pretty and sweet! Come give your big sister a hug~]
[Okay, I have a new internet daughter now]
Not just the audience, but the other contestants all thought Bo Xiling was sweet and adorable, until
Deep in a tropical jungle, a venomous snake had been lying in wait for a long time. It bit one contestant on the ankle, and everyone panicked and ran in every direction.
A hand darted out and seized the snake right behind its head with perfect precision.
Bo Xiling picked it up and looked at them in confusion, unable to understand why they were panicking. “It’s just a little snake. It won’t kill you. Don’t be scared.”
Contestants: “...”
Audience: “...”
Wait, girl, are you always this wild?
And why are you petting its head?!
Bo Xiling was puzzled. “Snakes are so cute. Why be afraid of them?”
-
After a contestant accidentally ate a poisonous fruit and became trapped in an illusion, Bo Xiling somehow produced a little spider. Under everyone’s horrified gaze, she placed it on the poisoned contestant and let it bite him.
The contestant was terrified. “Y-y-you...”
She replied with complete sincerity, “I believe he’d rather have my Xiao Qi nibble on him and get the poison out quickly than be eaten alive by countless bugs and ants in the illusion.”
The audience was left speechless. Wait, girl, do people from the Miao really practice sorcery?!
-
A rich second-generation playboy joined the show halfway through and kept pestering Bo Xiling in all sorts of ways, giving her a headache. She secretly sent out a poisonous bug to bite him.
For the next two hours, the playboy kept blurting out every rotten and shameful thing he had ever done, sobbing as he repented.
The audience cheered:
[A little booze makes you cocky, but mess with our Ling Bao and you might not make it out alive]
[People like this are disgusting. Lock him up right now, and I’m not joking!]
When filming ended, the playboy refused to be taken away by the police and struggled to get at Bo Xiling to settle the score.
Before he could get close, he saw the car in front of her slowly open its door. Sitting inside was the elusive head of the Jing family.
The next second, he watched Bo Xiling’s expression change in an instant. She stared at the man sternly, scrutinizing him. “Did you skip your meals again today? Did you do your steam bath? How’s your leg recovering? Are my new little bugs still alive?”
Before the man could answer, she gave a leisurely, cold laugh. “Forget it. I’ll settle accounts with you when we get back.”
The playboy was stunned. He thought the man would be furious, but then he heard the usually stone-faced Mr. Jing speak in a voice as gentle as a spring breeze, apparently quite pleased with this. “Ah Ling, don’t be angry. I’ll do whatever you say.”
Bo Xiling first met Jing Heng at a banquet.
The man had difficulty walking, but sitting in a wheelchair did nothing to diminish his poise.
People said he was the true power behind the Jing family. She didn’t care. She was more curious about how multiple kinds of poison bugs, mutually counteracting and reinforcing one another, could coexist in his legs.
She became interested in him.
Later, he confessed his feelings for her. Bo Xiling smiled darkly. “Loving me comes at a price.”
Jing Heng’s expression didn’t change. “What price?”
“Swallow my soulmate love bug. You’ll never be able to betray me in this lifetime.” She curved her lips, looking both bewitching and innocent.
“Betray me, and you die.”
“Fine. I’m willing.”
