Undercover, Day N: Caught by My Mother-in-Law Again [The Nineties]

[I couldn't write the story about the Dan household's daughter, so I'm switching to a new premise]

Yao Qianqian transmigrated into the body of a rookie who had just graduated from the police academy.

According to the plot, she was supposed to die while undercover in a human-trafficking ring.

Yao Qianqian crouched in a corner, looking at the young girls tied up one by one, and gave the knot around her own hands a quick test.

That's it?

In her previous world, she'd been a little beggar. She'd tied up plenty of people herself.

It's just a knot. Open!

After the girls successfully broke out with her and made it to the county public security bureau, they turned around. Huh? Where had that amazing big sister gone, the one who took down five men all by herself?

Amazing big sister had gone undercover again. What could she do? She'd made such a strong start.

The chief figured she was a fresh face and quick on her feet, so he decided she should become a full-time undercover agent. Sounded good.

Even when her boyfriend called to ask her to get married, she could only show up in an over-the-top punk outfit, swaying along as she walked, barely looking human.

Just a few days after she got her marriage certificate, the underground venue where she was undercover got raided.

The female officer leading the operation tried earnestly to talk some sense into her. “You're still young, girl. You should stay on the straight and narrow.”

Yao Qianqian nodded mechanically. “Sure, sure, absolutely.”

Then she looked up. Holy crap, was that her mother-in-law?

What kind of daughter-in-law and mother-in-law have a relationship like this?

They'd been married for half a year without ever meeting, only exchanging a few pleasantries over the phone. You could almost call them a Platonic mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.

Yao Qianqian didn't dare admit who she was. Her mission wasn't over yet.

After being “released,” Yao Qianqian put on a nurse's uniform and became a temp at an unlicensed clinic.

A month later, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law stared at each other across the police station.

The kind-hearted female officer earnestly advised her, “There's nothing wrong with being a nurse, girl, but you still need to keep your eyes open and pick a reputable hospital.”

Yao Qianqian obediently followed her advice and successfully went undercover at a shady hospital that crossed the legal line.

Before long, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law were staring at each other again.

The kind-hearted female officer was starting to lose her composure. “Girl, you... Fine, I won't say anything. You're young and new to the world, so I don't blame you. I'll talk to the chief and ask him to propose a special citywide crackdown on hospitals.”

Wait, was this right? Wasn't she supposed to be lectured and reprimanded?

Yao Qianqian suspected that the deep, masculine voice she'd carefully put on still hadn't hidden her identity.

She was about to test the waters when the female officer picked up a call from her son. He told her his wife was away on a business trip, and he had to work overtime too, so he couldn't come home for Mid-Autumn Festival.

The female officer sighed quietly, hung up, and turned to Yao Qianqian. “Let's spend Mid-Autumn Festival together.”

Later, Yao Qianqian went undercover under all sorts of identities: movie star, real estate agent, teacher, street vendor, taxi driver, cleaner. Her mother-in-law kept arresting her and letting her go.

Just as she was getting a real kick out of their game of cat and mouse, Yao Qianqian got arrested again.

The female officer laid a stack of photographs in front of her and earnestly advised, “Girl, stop scamming people. Your biological parents are very rich. Go act cute and sweet, then lie flat and enjoy life, okay?”

Yao Qianqian looked baffled. “Officer, what are you talking about? Me?”

The female officer looked heartbroken. “Yes, you. You're the baby who was taken in that kidnapping case twenty-six years ago. The baby they brought back was someone else. Look, the DNA matches!”
