"I won't plead guilty."

Covered in wounds, Su Wei stared vacantly at the empress before her and repeated again and again that she was innocent.

Su He was the reigning empress, as well as a notorious mad tyrant. She had raised a squad of shadow guards who swore loyalty to her, and she would not tolerate betrayal.

Su Wei was her most capable shadow guard, yet she had been thrown into the dungeon and charged with a crime. Su He did not kill her, however. Instead, she kept her by her side, never letting her out of her sight.

Before her old wounds had even healed, the shadow guard was brought to the empress. She knelt on the ground, pleading with her eyes. "I have never betrayed you."

But Su He didn't believe her. Instead, she took to toying with her. Su Wei had no idea why her mistress had changed. She dressed her in clothes she would never normally wear, took her out of the palace, and wouldn't make her suffer through training. She wouldn't even let her pour tea or fetch water. The shadow guard gradually became ensnared.

But just as Su Wei truly fell in love and tried to offer her heart, Su He belittled her until she was worth less than nothing.

"You're a shadow guard, lowborn and lowly. Did you really think you could rise to the top after just a few months?"

"Your martial arts have already been crippled, and you've been poisoned with a parasite these past few days..."

Su He lifted Su Wei's chin. In a soft voice, she said, "You won't get off easy."

Only then did the shadow guard wake as if from a dream. Her mistress had never believed her. It had all been wishful thinking.

Su Wei's face turned pale. She gave a bitter laugh and said nothing more.

.

The shadow guard lay in bed, her frail body tormented day after day by the parasite. Yet she refused to drink the antidote Su He fed her.

Su Wei turned onto her side. Her vision had grown blurry, and the spark of life she once had was long gone. She gave a weak smile and whispered:

"Mistress, I've already confessed. Please let me go."

A groveling-to-win-her-back story, full of angst and drama

Dai Ruocheng was to be married to a cold-faced, fearsome female general.

But she wasn't marrying for love. She was being sent in her elder sister's place. She had never been cherished, just a young lady in the household whom anyone could bully.

She was unlucky, too. A fortune-teller had said she wouldn't live long, so she was chosen and sent away.

On their wedding day, her wife in name only lifted her veil, questioned her identity, then turned and left, abandoning her to spend the night alone.

Dai Ruocheng understood. She had been abandoned again. She had been unwanted since birth.

.

Her wife, the renowned female general He Wei, treated her with every courtesy. They maintained a relationship in name, acting like a loving couple in front of others, but Dai Ruocheng was still left alone in the empty bedroom every night.

Dai Ruocheng couldn't endure it any longer. Whether she died one day sooner or later made little difference, so she stopped taking her medicine and stopped holding herself back...

In the end, she fell ill and took to her bed. Her face was deathly pale, her body lifeless, but a faint glimmer of hope remained in her eyes. She couldn't understand why the general was holding her hand now, tears falling as she knelt beside the bed and begged, finally showing her love too late:

"I'm sorry. Please don't leave me."
