Duan Zhu first met Xu Taoge in the school's washroom.
He was being kicked and punched by a group of boys, curled up on the wet floor.
Their eyes met at the washroom door, where Duan Zhu had accidentally wandered in. Xu Taoge closed his fearsome, ice-blade-like eyes and said nothing.

Later, Duan Zhu counted the bruises on his ribs in bed, her gaze full of pity.
Xu Taoge held a cigarette between his teeth and pulled her wrist, drawing her into his arms. "Why are you crying? I'm not going to die."
"Pah, pah, pah! Don't say things like that!"
"I'm going to die first, then. Someone's afraid of the dark, so I'll go ahead and light the way for my little princess on the road to the underworld."
He laughed recklessly, afraid of nothing.
