“Happiness is a good thing, but your health matters too. You need to feel better in your heart, and your body needs to feel good as well.”
Lin Tingwan looked at him expressionlessly. “Is that what you're asking of me?”
“I'm begging you,” he said. “I'm begging you to love yourself.”

In the early hours of a rainy night,
He Zhiyu carried a puppy he'd found outside the fire department headquarters to an animal hospital that was still open.
The bright lobby was bustling with people.
Wen Chuyin, dressed in a white coat, entered his line of sight.
After signing in at the front desk, she told him to take the puppy to Operating Room One.
She glanced at him as she did.
A fleeting glance, light and impassive.
He Zhiyu gave a self-mocking laugh.
She hadn't recognized him.

The seventh time she saw He Zhiyu at the hospital, Wen Chuyin stopped him outside the operating room.
Her expression was as detached as ever, and her voice was gentle, but every word she said cut deep.
“Don't come here anymore.”
His memories shot back to three years earlier.
He Zhiyu laughed in anger. “Wen Chuyin, do you think I'm just that pathetic?”

When a wildfire broke out in the northern suburbs, Wen Chuyin went up the mountain as the head of a temporary wildlife rescue team.
The wind picked up during the rescue, and she choked on the smoke, her eyes reddening.
He Zhiyu put a mask on her. She tried to push him away, but he held her in place.
“Keep it on.” The man pinned both her wrists with one hand. “This is my territory. If you're here, you follow orders.”
The night the wildfire was extinguished was the first time they'd talked about the past since their reunion.
“How have you been these past three years?”
After thinking it over, that was all he could come up with: a cliché opening line.
Wen Chuyin's expression was cool. She didn't look at him. “Not well.”
He Zhiyu gave a derisive laugh and turned to face her, his gaze burning.
His voice was steady, but hoarse.
“Funny. Neither have I.”
