Another idea: a laid-back but brilliant subordinate and his stern, overachieving boss
Blurb:
I want to quit.
"That's already the twenty-seventh time you've said that today. I've been listening to you talk about quitting every day for two years, ever since I started here. If you don't quit soon, I'll quit just to get away from hearing about it!" Coworker A roasted me without mercy.
"That's not all! He's been going on about quitting every single day for seven years, ever since he started!" Coworker B added.
You don't get it. This time I mean it.
"Sure, sure. We believe you," Coworker C cut in.
The office was filled with cheerful laughter.
So when I really did hand in my resignation to my blond, dark-skinned, workaholic boss, my coworkers were all left speechless.
My boss was no exception. His grayish-purple eyes gazed at me darkly, as if veiled in mist. "...Why?"
I bowed to the overachiever and answered with righteous conviction, "Work is too exhausting... I want to go home, lie flat, and slack off!"
He looked utterly baffled and handed my resignation back. "Rejected."
The rejection doesn't count. I told you, this time I mean it.
Because I've already completed my mission.
Furuya Rei had always had a headache over one of his junior colleagues and subordinates. The man was clearly more suited than anyone to work in public security, yet he spent every day slumped lazily over his desk, using all his intelligence to figure out how to pass his work off to someone else, while constantly threatening to quit.
He always completed every task perfectly and right away, but that attitude needed serious correction.
However, his busy life undercover had never left him time for it. Then, on the day the Black Organization was destroyed, his subordinate formally handed in his resignation. "My mission is over. Goodbye, Furuya-kun."
He no longer needed to make time to discipline him.
Or so he thought! How could he let someone this talented waste his life doing nothing?
Furuya Rei thought darkly: I won't let this lazy bum go until I've dragged him back and made him work for me for the rest of his life!
Although it may not be obvious from the blurb, these two are actually a couple.
The blurb may change, but the central premise won't.
