In the world of the freaks, there is an organization called Selene, which opposes the authorities because it refuses to accept their persecution of freaks. Qin Yuan Ye somehow blundered her way into the organization, then somehow blundered her way into a leadership position.

One day, Selene's leader, Huai Jun Heng, announced that they were going to attack the authorities' evil research institute. Qin Xin Ye was assigned to lead the charge, but in the middle of the battle, she discovered that the man she'd been “hungry” for since childhood was inside the institute. So she defected on the spot and stabbed Huai Jun Heng in the back.

Huai Jun Heng: ??? What kind of move is this? Couldn't you just recruit him?

Don't ask. She's just hopelessly love-struck.

But Shen Lian Ji was far more interested in studying. Every day, he asked, “Have you finished your homework?”

Fifty years ago, a fire broke out in the inpatient building of the First Affiliated Hospital of Yanchuan Medical University. The raging flames reduced everything to ashes. No one survived except a newborn baby.

Those born as freaks were “abominations”; those who became freaks later in life were “monsters.”

Freaks were seen as the source of calamity and persecuted wherever they went. Like rats crossing the street, they could only keep their heads down and stay out of sight. The ones the authorities used to hunt down other freaks were themselves freaks, known as “wards.” They wore “dog collars” and were kept under the strict, round-the-clock surveillance of their “guardians.”

But freaks are people too. Why can't their powers be seen as a sign of evolution? Why are they instead branded as inferior?

So someone asked: “If heteropeptin couldn't enhance the regenerative capacity of human cells, and didn't come with the ‘side effect’ known as superpowers, but was merely a secretion found in a small number of people and served no practical purpose, would the authorities still see freaks as thorns in their side, eager to eliminate them?”

The only thing we can be sure of is that the possibility of human evolution should not be pursued through freaks. Supernatural powers are ultimately only physical. If the mind does not evolve first, no amount of physical strength will help; it will only bring disaster to society. No matter how powerful freaks become, they cannot pass the thoughts of one generation directly to the next, and each new generation will keep repeating the regrets and tragedies of the one before it. Perhaps this is the true factor set in place by the Creator to prevent humanity from evolving into a superhuman species.

God created freaks not to test them, but to test all of humanity.

Content warnings:

1. This is a long novel. The beginning is a slow burn, but it picks up later. It is heartbreaking yet healing, and its characters grow through the twists and turns.

2. An ensemble cast and episodic structure. In addition to the leads, the story also explores the other members of the main group. Most have something unusual about them, such as a dark past they keep hidden or extreme thoughts and actions, but they are generally on the right track.

3. The main cast will appear gradually. The major pairings include both BG and BL, and the romantic storylines are clearly defined and never cross over.

4. The setting is fictional and unrelated to the real world.
