A Butterfly Kisses the Tip of a Puppy’s Nose

After finishing her college entrance exams, Yi Nian dragged her suitcase back to the small town where she'd lived as a child.

The old house was run-down, and hardly any neighbors were left.

She tidied up and moved in. On her first night, a thug tried to climb through her window.

She quietly picked up a bottle of freshly boiled water, but before she could throw it, she heard a scream and hurried footsteps fading into the distance.

When she opened the window again, she saw a man with a cigarette in his mouth. He glanced at her, then looked away.

Taking out the cigarette, he said irritably, “Get dressed properly.”

Yi Nian glanced down at the round-necked pajamas she was wearing and discreetly tugged the neckline a little wider.

Chen Sheng thought he wouldn't survive that rainy night at seventeen. Fever had left him dizzy and delirious, barely conscious.

Someone smashed through his window. He picked up a bottle of boiling water, but stopped himself just before throwing it.

The little girl from next door, barely ten years old, was holding a bowl of dumplings.

Chen Sheng didn't take them. He coldly told her to get lost.

The girl flinched, then left.

But a few years later, she came back.

She'd grown up and wasn't afraid of him anymore. She dared to glare at him and talk back.

Chen Sheng told her to get lost again, and Yi Nian got so angry she clawed at his face.

“Say that again! Go on, say it again!”
