The Sims

A story idea.

The protagonist and the love interest were high school classmates. The protagonist was withdrawn and had few friends, while the love interest was sunny and outgoing, and helped him many times. The protagonist secretly loved him for a long time but could never bring himself to say it.

The protagonist plays a game like The Sims. He creates two characters and pretends that another version of himself and the love interest are dating in a different world. He even adds a bunch of mods to the game.

Then, after they graduate and start working, he hears that the love interest had an accident and is now in a vegetative state.

At the same time, the characters in his game start to develop self-awareness.

The protagonist discovers that the love interest's consciousness is trapped in the game save from their youth...
