Four Thousand Meters Above Sea Level

[I have too little hair, so I'm not starting a new story anytime soon. I'll write one whenever the mood strikes.]

When You Jia's car reached the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, more than 4,000 meters above sea level, he encountered two men from inland China at a small roadside clinic. One of them was seriously ill and having trouble breathing.

After examining him, You Jia concluded, "High-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). He needs a portable hyperbaric oxygen chamber as soon as possible, nifedipine, and antibiotics to treat the infection."

The taller man looked him over and asked, "Are you a doctor?"

You Jia smiled and corrected him. "A veterinarian. So, do you trust me to treat your companion?"

After asking him a few questions, the man replied, "I do. Go ahead."

"My name is Su Ziheng. Thank you, Doctor You."

Some time later, You Jia was driving into the countryside to treat a Tibetan herder's cattle and sheep when he ran into Su Ziheng again. The other man suddenly asked, "Can you do me a favor?"

"What kind of favor?"

"Pretend to be my partner and live with me, to make the suspect I'm tailing lower his guard."

You Jia: "...?"

The suspect's neighbor:

"The guy next door really doesn't seem to be a cop. He's dating a man and living with him. I even caught them kissing the other day. Cops can't be gay, can they? I heard they'd get fired from their jobs."

"Couldn't he be making that sacrifice for the mission?"

"Would you go that far for a mission?"

"...That makes a lot of sense."
