A bomb that had stopped ticking suddenly began counting down again. In this critical situation, all the bomb disposal officers miraculously survived, thanks to an unexpected break in a wire.
Could such a happy ending, full of coincidences, really happen?
Matsuda Jinpei noticed several suspicious details and turned a probing gaze toward his childhood friend. Hagiwara Kenji wagged his two fluffy tails and pleaded sweetly:
"Why are you looking at me like that, Jinpei-chan? You know I can't do anything except a little illusion magic. We all survived this time because the Goddess of Luck was looking out for us, right?"
Matsuda Jinpei looked at his childhood friend, who had changed back to his original form and was using illusion magic to slack off and nap, and chuckled. He thought, "As if I'd believe you. You definitely did something behind my back. So what did you give up for this 'lucky' ending, Hagi...?"
But before Officer Matsuda could start questioning him, they stumbled upon a locked-room murder with no apparent suspect.
As a nekomata with only a faint trace of its bloodline, Hagiwara Kenji could no longer hide the changes he'd been desperately trying to conceal from his childhood friend...
Before you read:
1. HagiMatsuHagi pairing, with Hagiwara as a nekomata and Matsuda as a human. The original setting gets another layer of fantasy worldbuilding. Although Matsuda is human, he'll know more magic than Hagiwara for plot reasons.
2. Includes some highly unscientific rescue scenes and detective work, as well as urban legends from Neon City and all sorts of monsters.
3. The main plot isn't about taking down an organization. It's about the everyday adventures of an unscientific duo.
4. In short, if the characters aren't very smart, that's absolutely my fault as a clueless author. Feel free to point out any plot holes!
