The new executive at the company is called “Leung,” the Cantonese pronunciation of the surname Liang.

One day, a female colleague whispered to Tao Yu, “You’re the only person in the whole company who makes Mr. Leung’s English name sound so nice.”

Tao Yu smiled. “It’s nothing. I’m not that close to Mr. Leung.”

As it happened, someone overheard them.

With all eyes on him, he summoned the junior employee to his office. Only after finishing his work did he lift his gaze and casually undo the top two buttons of his collar.

“Not close?”

He glanced at her. His thin lips barely moved, and his cool, clear voice rang like jade striking stone, each word tapping at her heart. “Was it a ghost who said last night that she wanted to take a walk with me?”

Tao Yu had seen Liang Zhili’s back many times.

On the way to school, in crowded corridors, beneath streetlights on busy roads, and at banquets filled with distinguished guests.

Then one day, he turned around. The boy stood tall and straight in his blue-and-white school uniform, hands in his pockets.

The sunset sky glowed red. He was impossibly handsome.

“Would you like to take a walk with me on Saturday night?” he asked.

Flustered, she nodded without thinking, then felt terribly awkward. She ducked her head to hide it, not noticing the faint, almost imperceptible smile at the boy’s lips.

“Later, she would realize that she could never again feel that way: walking beside someone, cheeks hot and heart racing, awkward and silent, wracking her brain for something to say only to swallow every word before it left her mouth. It was like carrying an unbearable secret, afraid he would find out, yet hoping he would understand the feelings of a girl in love.”

After successfully joining the company, Tong Hua’s story about her dead husband grew more elaborate as she got closer to her coworkers.

For instance, her WeChat profile picture still reminded her of her late husband, and flowers made her think of his pollen allergy.

She even gave her late husband a profession straight out of a romance drama to fend off workplace harassment. She was his widow.

Everything was perfectly watertight, until the company was acquired and her coworkers eyed the newly appointed CEO with suspicion.

“He’s 186 centimeters tall, graduated from a top university, has an impressive bearing and a cold, handsome face, a beauty mark under his eye, and a pollen allergy. He drinks his coffee black and runs a tech company. Tong Hua, how is he so much like your dead husband?”

Xie Qianyu had been cold-hearted and aloof since childhood. Women’s admiration and his parents’ pressure to marry only annoyed him.

At 28, he finally gave in to his family’s wishes and registered his marriage to the daughter of his parents’ friend.

But only the two of them knew it was a contract marriage, kept secret from both sets of parents.

A year later, they would divorce amicably, as agreed.

Not long after the wedding, Xie Qianyu went overseas for work. He returned to the country three months ago.

On his first day at the new company, he heard that he bore a striking resemblance to one of his subordinates’ dead husbands.
