A couple who started from nothing, weathered hardship together, and became one of the most prominent merchant families in the capital were suddenly hit by an eighteen-year itch.

One was so angry her hands shook as she threatened to divorce her husband. The other held his head high, eyes red, cutting paper and reaching for the ink.

Their friends and family pleaded with them to make up, and their grown children returned with their own families to comfort them.

In the end, the two sides reached an agreement: they would split up once their youngest son got married, dividing the property fairly so neither would owe the other anything.

Cheng Yuanmo: "Look at how gentle and considerate other people are. You act like you want to walk all over me every single day. Do I get no dignity at all?"

Ji Ling'an: "We've been together for eighteen years. You only just realized this is how I am? If you want someone gentle, I'll find one for you!"

That very night, Ji Ling'an brought two handsome young men to the estate to keep Master Cheng company for a night of passion.

Cheng Yuanmo gritted her teeth, wrapped an arm around each of them, and went inside.

He had sent the men in, but the ache in his heart only grew worse.

So Ji Ling'an snuck out under cover of darkness to eavesdrop at the wall. The noises inside were lively indeed. Tears of anger streamed down his face, and he turned to prepare divorce papers, only to collide headfirst with Cheng Yuanmo, who was sneaking out in the dark.

Cheng Yuanmo: "..."

Ji Ling'an: "..."

They were both outside. So who was making all that noise in there?

Cheng Yuanmo scratched her head awkwardly. "Well, those two weren't to my taste. Pick someone else next time."

The youngest son's wedding was the talk of the whole city. Everyone knew Master Cheng doted on her children, and that she always made a celebration as lively as possible.

After the ceremony, the youngest son sought out his parents and took them by the hand, speaking earnestly. "You're not young anymore. It's time to grow up."

The carriage ride home was unusually quiet. The writing brush, ink, paper, and inkstone were tucked into a drawer beneath the seat, but neither of them made a move.

Cheng Yuanmo gave a little cough. "What should we eat tomorrow?"

Ji Ling'an glanced at her. "Sweet and sour fish."

Cheng Yuanmo quietly scooted closer and held Ji Ling'an's hand, warming his cool fingertips in her warm palm. "The kind you make."

"Mm." Ji Ling'an looked away, the tips of his ears turning red.
