Only as she lay dying did Zhe Ying learn that she was in a novel, and that she was the male lead He Yun's moonlight, the one he would use to prove his path.
He Yun had made a pact with her and sworn to serve her. But after she put an end to a disaster, he took advantage of her weakened state and sacrificed her to Heaven with the very magic she had taught him.
Zhe Ying died full of resentment.
But when she opened her eyes again, she had returned to her youth, still the proud, peerlessly pampered little princess of the Ghost Clan, adorned with stars and moonlight.
Something calling itself the Moonlight System latched onto her and demanded she make a pact with He Yun again.
"Do as I say, and when He Yun makes a name for himself, there will definitely be a place for you by his side," the System said confidently.
Zhe Ying gave a cold laugh.
Ignoring the System's warnings, she went alone to the deepest dungeon beneath the tower.
There, He Yun's archenemy from his previous life was imprisoned: Huai Wu, the Demon Venerable.
But at this point, Huai Wu was only a boy her own age. He was covered in wounds, yet his gaze remained fierce.
Zhe Ying thought it over, then crouched in front of him and asked:
"Would you make a pact with me?"
-
Zhe Ying had originally planned to raise a demon lord even more formidable than the one in her previous life.
But after all her hard work, she raised Huai Wu into a universally acclaimed paragon of the righteous path instead.
Zhe Ying considered ending her pact with Huai Wu more than once, but she could never quite bring herself to do it.
Huai Wu was beautiful and obedient, and incredibly easy to have around. He could host guests and cook, and if she pointed east, he would never go west.
After much deliberation, she decided to keep Huai Wu by her side as a beautiful but useless ornament.
But on the day He Yun became an Immortal Venerable and tried to use her to prove his path
Zhe Ying woke from a nap and hurried over, only to see the boy who had always been meek and gentle standing before a mountain of corpses, his robes fluttering as he smiled nonchalantly.
Huai Wu lifted his eyes and looked slowly toward her. The overwhelming hostility surging around him abruptly vanished.
He hid his bloodstained hand behind his back, lowered his eyes, and said in a pitiful voice:
"Don't abandon me."
-
Huai Wu had a secret.
He could hear the System's voice and listen as it listed Zhe Ying's likes and dislikes.
So in the years that followed, Huai Wu kept his claws sheathed and debased himself by pretending to be exactly the kind of person Zhe Ying liked.
Until one day, the System suddenly started trying to pair Zhe Ying with that lofty Immortal Venerable, forcing her to do things she didn't want to do.
Huai Wu decided then that sooner or later, he would crush the System and that Immortal Venerable to dust.
